CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands - Selling everything from timeshares to T-shirts, "barkers" have been a constant presence — and nuisance — for tourists visiting the U.S. Virgin Islands.
No more.
As of Aug. 1, the ragtag group of business promoters will be evicted from store fronts and other tourist-friendly areas they have dominated for several decades."

They are kind of annoying. But on other hand pretty easy to ignore.
I've had pretty funny banter with a couple, but never been insulted. That's disappointing to read.
Well, it may have been a good experience for you but countless exit surveys list that and the back to the ship taxis as our greatest negative faults. While we are losing our position as a number one port in the Caribbean, something has to be done!
From entering and exiting STT since 1978 and a bunch on island vacations I also am going to have to agree with Ron.
The sidewalk salesman should be able to practice their business unencumbered by law, however in recent visits they have become too numerous and too aggressive. One comes to the island to chill - Tijuana is and should not be CA.
It would be nice if they could find a happy medium, but until they do - I support the limitation of free trade - because free trade became a nuisance.
I too, will not miss being harassed! Good News!
I have seen the timeshare people be down right nasty with visitors and have reported them to no avail. About time!
This is a sad thing.
First they kicked the Hare Krishna's out of the airports. Then the Do Not Call list came along and my phone stopped ringing. Now the barkers will have to leave. Pretty soon there won't be anybody I can tell to...(oops, gotta keep it clean)... "BUZZ OFF!!" 😀

In all fairness, the barkers were given every opportunity to conform to what was required of them (licenses, dress, etc.) and although several of them did comply many did not, probably assuming that if they ignored the whole thing it would go away. Moves have been afoot for years to try and clean up downtown and make it more hospitable for visitors and only good can come of these efforts especially when you note, as Ron reminds us, that exit surveys have been very negative about the barkers and their incessant pestering.
One of the most annoying things on vacation is being harassed by someone trying to get my money for something I don't want. I really hate being rude to these people by ignoring them or by being snippy, but they don't leave you alone if you kindly say "no thank you" and try to walk away. I AM NOT A RUDE PERSON, but I have learned if I don't want to be trapped on my vacation by someone else's agenda, I have to behave in a manner I don't care for.... like I said, thank you St. Thomas! 🙂
The taxi drivers drive me nuts everyone you walk by wants to take you back to the ship that I didn't come from I'm thinking about wearing a placcard saying I'm not on a cruise

They are FAR worse than the timeshare hawkers. I have never been harassed by the TS guys once I say NO. But, the cab guys drive me utterly crazy. EACH and EVERY driver you pass you get the same thing. The government should do something about them. After all, how many people who want a cab don't know how to get one.
How about T-shirts? NO CAB or…??
The cab drivers in Havensight crack me up more than anything else. I work at Shipwreck, and would pop into the Drugstore across the way, and each time I would walk past them (in my Shipwreck shirt!!) they tried to usher me into a cab - and laughed when I said 'Sure, take me to Shipwreck!'!
You have to laugh right? Otherwise you'll pull your hair out, and I do enough of that when I visit Boston!
