My husband and I are going to visit St. Thomas in June and we are thinking of bringing our 18 year old nephew with us. We were wondering about the drinking age in the US Virgin Islands and the British Islands since they are so close to each other, is it 18 or 21 years old? And how strict are they in enforcing the drinking laws? We love our nephew, but he has had some problems drinking in the past. We were thinking of taking him on the trip with us for a nice break, but not if he will be able to have access to alcohol. Also, what age do you have to be to get into the bars, clubs etc.? Any info would greatly be appreciated towards us making the decision to bring him or not. And if he cannot get into bars/clubs, are there any places for teenagers to hang out at? Thank you!

Hi There,

The drinking age is 18 and it is not closley regulated. From my experience in both the BVI and USVI, as long as you can reach across the bar, you will be served.

There's alcohol worldwide. What are you going to do?

Yeah, I'm 18, and from St. Croix, and I can legally buy alcohol. Even before I was 18, no one ever gave me a problem about selling me liquor. I guess you'll have to talk to your nephew.

Even though he may be considered an adult at 18, in the eyes of your family he is still a kid and your responsibility on that trip. Now would you be able to relax and enjoy the trip while constantly worrying about him and drinking? Only you can answer that.

But as it stands, as the good folks mentioned above, 18 is the limit. Good luck!

I don't live in the islands ' yet ' but I had no problems getting served in the states before I was 21, so as the others told you; if he has a problem he has to learn to deal with the complications that go along with being an adult. If this offends you I'm sorry but the truth hurts at times, he may need assistance in this matter that you or any other family member may not be able to handle. I grew up with an alcoholic and was going down the same road; but I grabbed myself by the boot-straps and did a self recovery. He may have to hit rock bottom before he realizes what he's doing to the family and learn from this or he may just have to have a friend/ family member or even a stranger (to him that is) sit down and talk with him about the true costs of too much to drink.

Best of luck....

I agree.
Adulthood is underrated if you are treated like a child.
Maybe this guy just wants to party a little. It is natural for a little teenage drinking whether legal or illegal. Are you planning on letting him run around or arent you going be with him the majority of the time? If you really wanna keep him alcohol free and he has a problem, take him to a treatment facility. Otherwise, tie him down in the room and you can go out and get blitzed.
I'd hate to be that dude...hahahha
