We're going to be in STT beginning June 3rd. Of the several times we've visited we have never ferried over to Water Island, so we thought we'd like to take a day trip while we're there. I've read several posts from time to time about using golf carts for transportation on Water Island. My question is: Are golf carts available only in conjuction with villa rentals, or is there a vendor that rents golf carts to people making day-only visits? My wife has limited mobility and from everything I've read and heard, the walk from the ferry landing to Honeymoon Beach would probably be more than she could handle. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi WH - I'm hoping someone replies to your inquiry. I submitted a post last week if anyone could provide pros or cons on the water villas. Water Island looks beautiful and is what I'm looking for in terms of solitude and being away from the mainland of STT.

Anyone who has past or present experience or cares to make an opinion would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jon,

My wife and I spent our honeymoon on Water Island back in 1989 when the Sea Cliff Resort was there (Hugo took care of it). But, we had a fantastic time on W.I., you can take the ferry over to STT for the shopping, touring, et and go back for the "solitude" you looking for. I always tell my wife if Sea Cliff was re-built we would be going to Water Island every year.

WH,

I don't know of any golf carts for rent, I've seen them tied in with a Villa rental, I may be wrong.

There are no rentals for golf carts on Water Island. Myself , husband, and dog lived out there in 2000 and are still in contact with several people out there. If you are really interested in visiting for the day, I'd say go for it. The people who live there are super friendly and always willing to help others. I have no doubt that within seconds of departing the ferry and starting the climb up the big hill that leads to the beach you'd have a local saying "WHERE YOU HEADING? NEED A LIFT?" The "locals" by the way are mostly retired Americans with little else to do than strike up friendly converstions with visitors. I can't tell you how many rides I was offered over the course of a year as I'd be hiking the roads of Water Island! Literally if a car or cart passes you and you, even if they don't know you, if they have the space they'll offer you a ride. The beach there is beautiful and if you're there on the weekends Heidi's Wagon grills up delicious burgers. On the weekdays it is practically deserted and awsomely peaceful. Hope this helps!

amee: ALL of the locals in the USVI are Americans. 😉

Thank you East Ender, you are, of course, correct! I guess a more accurate description would have been "Snow Birds" as most have migrated from the Northern countigous 50 states (many only winter on the island) and are not sterotypically what a stranger might envision a local Water Islander to be, in the sense that they are not of a native Carribean descent/heritage. Though I have to say that while living in the Islands I did feel a million miles away from what I'd consider a typical American experience. I guess ISLAND TIME will do that to you!
