We just returned from our third trip to Sapphire Beach Resort, courtesy of my sister in law's timeshare (Flagship). The good news is that, as of Friday 1/19/07, you can get hot food and a drink at the resort. The bad news is that it is from a portable bar with a gas grill between buildings B and C. Decent drinks and reasonably priced food from the grill ($8 burger, $10 Mahi sandwich) and reasonably priced drinks and beer. Thet said they were open until 6 every day, but they closed at 4 their first day because of no cruise ships in town. The bar and the restaurants are still closed, very sad. The resort is not being well maintained-very sad for such a beautiful beach.
Our first night in (Saturday) we decided to try Grapevine Grille (formerly Azure) at Sapphire Village-the only restaurant within walking distance. If you love overcooked & overpriced meat served with cold mashed potatoes, as well as overpriced & tasteless seafood scampi, well this place is a little bit of heaven for you. $27 gets you slow service and terrible food that seems to want to cater to the bar stools rather than the diners. The Caesar salad was excellent, though (we wish we stopped at that course-$8). For a Saturday night at 7:30, there was only one other table of diners. These folks will not last-although the waitress did throw in a round of drinks because of the 40 minute wait to serve us.
Red Hook is changing. A new ferry dock will open soon, and a new shopping mall is going in across from the old one. The Grateful Deli is out of business-too bad, they had great food. Duffy's is still a great experience for drinks and food-but they should clean their bathroom more than they do. Molly Malone's is always a safe bet for good food at decent prices, but they also need to clean their bathroom more than they do. Carribean Saloon is a great restaurant with clean bathrooms. I discovered The Warehouse on this trip, a bar on top of Senor Pizza that advertises itself as a "poo peoples' pub". What a great joint. Very spartan, 3 pool tables, you pour your own drinks (ask for a rum and coke, you get a bottle of Cruzan and a bottle of coke with a cup of ice, whatever you can fit in the cup is all yours for about $3). They prominently post above the windows "please don't throw things out the windows"-I'd love to hear some of those stories. Elegant? ABsolutely not. Fu? You bet, and the batrooms are the cleanest in Red Hook.
My last rant is about taxi drivers. AM I the only one who thinks that many of these guys are bandits?
Good to hear about Red Hook and Sapphire, although Sapphire is such a sad story. Perfect location, although most of it is rundown. At least the snorkeling is good there.
Taxi drivers? We had our experience with one and will definetly check all taxis we take. Better to have a car.
One thing I can't understand in St. Thomas is that you can drink in a car, but can't be drunk...what's with that?
Connie, are you sure about that? I thought I read somewhere that 5 years ago they passed a law that prohibited drinking while driving (open container law) in STT. If I can find out for sure, I'll post the link.
I'm sure Marty, Islander, or some others can answer that correctly tho.
Getting ready to pull the trigger on a last minute anniversary trip to St. Thomas. We can get a 1 BR Condo @ Sapphire Beach (first floor, right on the beach). The rate is about $250/night. Is it worth it? Are there better properties/areas I should try?
Thanks in advance.
Mountaineer girl...I'm not positive about that, but when I heard it down there I couldn't believe it.
Grateful Deli jdidn't go out of bsuiness...they ust changed name and location...they are now on STJ, in Mongoose Junction, called Deli Grotto...FANTASTIC!!!! Even better than they were before. Check it out!
