Hi Forum-
I wish I could post a link to this, but I received it in an email. I suppose further info can be found on United's site. For those of us who don't fly United, we might now enjoy slightly more competitive prices to STT from these hubs, in light of this announcement. (Fingers Crossed)

ST. THOMAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS, August 1, 2005 – United Airlines will offer three additional weekly flights from its hubs at Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and Washington Dulles International (IAD), to Cyril E. King airport (STT) in St. Thomas, beginning Saturday, December 17, 2005.

Augmenting United Airlines’ existing service, the new flights between Chicago and Washington, D.C. to St. Thomas are scheduled to maximize convenience and connections to the U.S. territory. The additional service will be operated with an Airbus (A-320) aircraft, with 12 first class and 126 coach class seats.

“We are very pleased about the success of United Airlines’ existing flights and the airline’s continued investment in the U.S. Virgin Islands,” stated Commissioner of Tourism Pamela C. Each week, United will offer four flights on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday between Washington, D.C. and St. Thomas. On Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday, flights are scheduled to depart Washington Dulles International Airport at 8:25 AM, and arrive in St. Thomas at 1:15 PM (flight # 1063). The return flight (flight # 1065) departs St. Thomas at 3:59 PM and arrives in Washington, D.C. at 8:43 PM. I just booked my airline ticket with United for May. I paid $418 pp/roundtrip including all taxes. I think the base price was @ $370. Is that a good price? My travel agent said it was but I always wonder how honest they are.

Does United offer refunds if their fare goes down?? We booked 10 tickets so even $50 a ticket is a lot!!

you can look on the main travel websites and compare prices. I always compare travelocity, expedia, orbitz, and kayak to see who's flying where I nned to go and when, and then go to the individual airline's websites. Depending on where you're flying from, $418 sounds like a good price. I'm flying American in November STL-MIA-STT and I'm paying more than that, and THAT price was the recently-announced "sale" price

You are such a smarty pants. And lucky too! That's a really great price. I think all airlines charge a fee of $100 for fare change/refunds to any tickets so you have to have quite a drop in fare before you realize any voucher $. (they give you vouchers not cash)

Relax. You got a good deal.

April- that's a good price for a hub city - and a great price for a non-hub. Not sure where you're coming from.

I don't use Travelocity, Expedia, etc anymore because the fares on their sites have never been as low as the direct airline site's fare when I've checked. Thus, they don't give a realistic view of the bargains available and a user might wind up overpaying if they rely on these sites alone.

USAir doesn't charge any fee for the voucher for the drop in fare (as of now - they might begin to charge in the future). I have heard that some other airlines do charge.

In May, I would expect to pay between $300 and $450 getting a good sale - PHL to STT.

I agree with Diana - relax - you got a good deal. 😉

I'm coming from Chicago and everything always seems more expensive from there. I did think I was getting a good price but I wasn't sure.

I never use anything like Expedia, etc... either. I always compare those sites to the airline site and the airline is always cheaper.

If you are coming from Chicago look at ATA's fares. Currently they are offering $100 each way plus taxes from Chicago to San Juan. From San Juan you have several options. Figure about $85 each way to the VI.

ATA's normal fare is $274 each way. They do jack this up to around $500 if you are coming for the Christmas holidays.

If you take ATA's 8:20 AM non stop flight with good connections you are on the island for dinner.

Hi Pete,
We have not travelled to USVI before, but I noticed that you said that ATA out of Chicago has flights, when I went on the ATA site I cannot find that option for a destination. Is it thru a charter?
Thanks,
Susan

You have to fly from Chicago Midway to San Juan PR. They have two flights a day I believe and the early flight is non stop.

I just checked ATA's web site still show they are flying this route. Never know what an airline in bankruptcy is going to do, but I wouldn't think they would dump this flight as it is always full.

In San Juan you have your choice of taking American Eagle, Cape Air, Seaborne or Caribbean Sun to STX or STT.

I personally like Cape Air, but my wife is nervous flying in a nine passenger Cessna.
