Hello Dawn,

Are you wanting a 'real' underwater camera or a disposable one? Can also try a waterproof case.

I've tried a disposable a few years ago and wasn't pleased with the pictures,so I'm looking for any input on what's available once we arrive. If there is a brand of a disposable that you recommend or if the best bet is to purchase a "real one". Thank you for your response!

Hello,

I asked a friend. Here are the responses:

There are lots of them out there...do you want film or digital or video.

There are special ones for film.....if you go digital then you need to make sure there is a case for the camera. Many Nikons have cases as do Canon. I am not sure about Sony, Panasonic or Pentax. I think the newer Olympus also have cases. A case for a larger SLR or digital is about $1200-$1500. A case for the littler cameras run $150 to $200.

One thing to check out is if the case has an on off switch for the camera. Most of the Canon cases have on/off switches. You might try Boolchands on St. Thomas. They have a pretty good selection, as does B&H Photo and Video in NY.

If you want video...it becomes more complicated and less choices. The video cases range from $500 to $1500 depending on camera.

Also, you might consider another option waterproof bags... http://www.waterproofcases.net/waterproof-camera-cases.html from aquapac.

It all depends on what you want to do...and how much you want to spend...and if you already have a camera.

Hope that helps.

Canon makes a small compact camera ( ELPH Sport) I believe it sells for around $150, waterproof to 16 ft. if you are only using it for snorkeling it works great. It uses the advantix film system
