Hello Angie,

Yes there is. We have a section about fruits in the flora & fauna section of this site. You can learn more there, check it out https://www.vinow.com/general_usvi/flora_fauna/fruit.php. You can find them for sale in some of the smaller grocery stores, outdoor market areas and at road side fruit stands.

St. John is virtually devoid of locally grown fruit. Even if you are lucky to find a fruit in season and determined enough to seek out nearly every day, only nutmegs and an occasional key lime (if you're persistent) can be found for purchase. Even Natures seldom has local produce. Nearly everything on St. John is shipped in. That said local mangoes, the smaller yellow ones, are very good and often available, but I think those are shipped in also. The honor fruit stand on North Shore road opposite Gibney beach sometimes has a fruit or two, but usually not.
St. Thomas fruit stands have much better variety, and they don't look at you as if you had two heads if you ask about sour sop.
If you have been to other (typically) larger islands, lower your expectations on tropical produce in St. John-your stateside grocer will probably have better supply.

Angie -

I am on St. Croix - I live here - and I have cherries (although they aren't like any cherry I've ever seen), oranges, key limes, grapefruit, papayas, mangos, coconuts, bananas, breadfruit, avocado, carambola, some form of sugar cane, cashews, and I'm not not sure what all else in my yard. We actually rent, so I have to ask the landlord what some of it is ... I had never seen a "live" cashew and didn't know about the red pod thing on them until I saw it...

So in answer to your question, yes, at least one of the islands is literally covered up in fruit!

If you are renting a villa on STJ, you may find that the owner has planted some fruit trees.

On STJ, in villas, I have come across papaya, banana and passion fruit. They were in manicured villa gardens, so I believe they were planted by the owners. Delightful, nonetheless.

On STT I often come across wildly growing genips, plantain, papaya, banana, mangoes, guava, key lime, pomegranate, breadfruit and sugar cane.

I would love to know where to find wildly growing passion fruit on STT.
