My husband & I have been to St. Croix many times, though 5 or more years ago. Dream--move to USVI when I retire in 2 or 7 years. Visited St. Thomas (& St. John) last summer to compare. We prefer St. Croix--as we remember it. Need a trip back to St. Croix to see if it's as we remember it.

Make that--need a cheap trip. I teach--am not rich. 🙂 I've searched for package deals, but STX is not on the main circuit anymore, so STT is cheaper. Any suggestions to help us find a reasonable air/hotel package would be appreciated. Nothing fancy--just clean & not falling apart. Dates--about a week between June 11 & 1st or 2nd week of July.

Thanks,
Candace

I am staying at Mt. Victory Camp on St. Croix for the month of June. Bruce, the owner, has made it very reasonable and it seems to be very pleasant. Email me at [email protected] for info on the great rate I got (NOT what is posted on the website).

They are great! Hey - even cheaper - the unit I am renting is sized for a family of 4 - lots of room if you can't find anything else. I will be wandering the island all during the days....

Beleive it or not, I usually have had better luck booking separate land and air packages. USAirways has packages that sometimes are cheaper, but not always, so you can check them if they service your area.

For the airfare, I would go to http://www/travelocity.com/ and sign up for their fare watcher service. They will automatically e-mail you when the fare for your city pair drops (or rises) significantly. I saved a friend almost $300 by telling her about this.

As far as low cost accommodations, if you are not into camping (I'm not) try the Pink Fancy http://pinkfancy.com . It is in Christiansted and everyone I know who has stayed there has loved it. Also check out Hotel on the Cay http://www.hotelonthecay.com/ as they often have great rates, especially in the summer. I personally love the Hotel Caravelle http://www.hotelcaravelle.com/ which is only slightly more expensive. Other budget choices include The Breakfast Club http://nav.to/thebreakfastclub and Cottages by the Sea http://www.caribbeancottages.com/ .

After June 1st Usairways is adding a flight from Charlotte (CLT) direct to St Croix on Saturdays. Might help depending where you're starting from???

I can't thank you all enough! Your suggestions here & off the board have been very helpful! I appreciate your kindness, the generosity of your time, & your encouragement.

David's doing the taxes ONE MORE TIME to see if there's anything we missed. Too bad we owe the gov't. this year--didn't see it coming, but last year we had more deductions w/ a job move & higher mortgage on our last house. Dang. I think I should be exempt from taxes just because I have taught for 23 years. 🙂

Thanks again! This website is wonderful!

Just a comment or two. Having been to St. Croix almost every year since '94 it has not changed too much in this span. Planning to go back again this summer. Things have been "cleaned up" somewhat in Chrstiansted, no cruise ships scheduled for Fredericksted that I know of,most of the same restaurants still operating. It's still the same place that we really love. I do not think you will find airfares much under the $500 range from anywhere on the east coast. I keep looking but can't find any routes that work out less than $475. As far as a place to stay, you really should check out the Buccaneer for a Mtn View room. WIth all the extras such as the free breakfast, free nights, etc it really is a terrific value. Good luck.
