We read with trepidation the poor reviews on Trip Advisor about the Westin but we wanted to go to St John and had enough points to cover the room cost. We actually called and spoke to a mgr before our trip to discuss the poor reviews and was assured that everything was going to be great (what else could they say?) Anyway, when we arrived thay had no record of our reservation. Luckily I had a hard copy of our confirmation, however, they could not book us into our poolside room and downgraded us to a garden view room. OK stuff happens no biggie. But it took them over an hour to ck us in and then the garden view room didn't even have a balcony or patio! I went back to the desk and spent another 30 min telling them that it was unacceptable and they finally agreed to move us to a "poolside room" the next day. They gave us $75 resort credit (big whoops!) for our troubles. When we got our room the following day you couldn't even see the pool nevermind being poolside. I mentioned this to them but they were not to be swayed. Not a good overall first impression.
Anyhow - the room was clean, wifi reception was good and the resort was nice although 95% of the guests hung out at the pool so that should tell you something about the man-made beach. We chose to hike to the real beaches, rent a Jeep and sail Hobie Cats with Sail Safaris out of Cruz Bay - all were excellent excursions. Cruz Bay had some great sunsets and was fun at night.
We plan to go back to St John but we'll rent a villa next time.
sorry to hear about your experience at the westin... not a good way to start a vacation. you seem to have made the best of it, but i hate whenever it happens... i wonder if the managers know about this...
Sorry to hear about your experience.
We have stayed there for 4 years in a row (2 weeks in paradise) - 5th year in row coming in a few weeks. And love it each and every time - as well as many others I know. My suggestion is to stay away from the Westin hotel and stay at the Westin villas (fully contained). They take points for the villas as well. Or rent a regular villa on the island - but they will not take points - so be prepared to spend $$$ for a nice villa. I care little about the man-made beach as well - if you want that and a hotel experience then stay at Caneel (but again $$$). The island is small - so getting to many fabulous beaches is no issue.
having cake = eating cake
I stay on points throughout Starwood - I have never had them 'lose' my reservation - do not know how that is even possible (?). Given what you state what Westin's response was (and my experiences have been) - you either have bad luck, or...
