The Best Trip!-- page 2
Day 3
Up early thanks to a pair of thrashers. As we settle into our cottage, we name our companions. The thrashers are Neil ( one deformed foot causing him to kneel when eating) and Bill....for obvious reasons. The two most curious and therefore closest kitties were Longface and Smallpuss. They had a couple of unfortunate experience of a couple of washwater dousings.....wrong place at the wrong time......but insulted cats none- the -less.
The large hermit crab under the tent platform became known as Peeper. The first night, my husband kept hearing very deliberate, careful footsteps all around the cottage. Everything at Maho is built on platforms (and steps!) He would wake and peek out....nothing........I slept through most of the drama due to a freshly cracked rib that dragged luggage all day then bounced up that cruel last 250 yards of road(?) to MBC and demanded some Tylenol PM.
I woke to find him on the deck, watching a massive land crab drag a log up the hill!
On the last night of our previous vacation, in a hotel in Orlando waiting to fly out early a.m. I had packed 10 days camping on the beach in the keys ( bless air-conditioning for that one) and was trying to finish reading a gull-pooped paperback so i could throw it away, when he jumped from bed, slammed the door, wedged a chair and called the police before i could turn a page. We had a peeping -tom, who pushed in the door! Moved rooms @ 2:00..... not a rested travel day! But in honor of that horror Peeper was named.
The frog-peepers werent named, just appreciated. We have huddled in tents in places where the nocturnal nightlife was so loud that it was like a bad bugs bunny cartoon blasted through theater speakers...gotta laugh...couldnt sleep....
This was explore day.....desination cinnamon. We hit the beach and turned left. Because there is so much going on over every single bit of coral, we worked slowly round the point.
Even with a rash-guard shirt and such warm water, i would start to get a little chilled, especially diving to photograph such irresistable goodies. The topography couldnt have been kinder, just about goose-bump time we would beach it and walk in the sun to the next point. It would be hard to name best spot that day....it was ALL good. We worked down the coast to cinnamon. I needed a drink and wanted to explore the road not taken when booking.
Chatted a bit, with yet another kayaker from Co. (It became funny met kayakers and middleschool teachers everywhere we went!) walked the beach and planned to snorkle cay, but clouds were building and we decided to head back. Forgot the weather as soon as we placed face in water......there was a little chop and current rounding the point to Big maho, but nothing tough. Hubby got a great pic of a turtle that just about rammed him, but they are fast, and i just saw a fin and fanny at great speed! I love bluejack and we swam in large schools of large ones. They are the one frustration of mine photographing.....must need a filter for that incredible color!
Hungry and happy, up the steps for a snack, just to get us up the steps for a shower, so we could go up the steps for dinner. Wonderful food at MBC, loved the fact that there was always a little taste of the islands, like a slice of yam with the steak fratitas. About this time of any trip i go through a period of there-is-no-such-thing-as-too-much-salad....there was enough here! Took a few photos from pavillion, headed downstairs with great intentions of a great book. hah! sleep.....waves........sleep....got up and went to bed!
Those damn thrashers wake me up every morning. I don't even use an alarm clock. Glad you're having a good time.
