hi islander,
finally have a minute to let you know how vacation went....st. thomas is beautiful and the sapphire was nice and for what we wanted to do fit the bill quite well....it has great beach access and the snorkeling was pretty good right there...boys are little snobs and think that hawaii is still better....we did rent skidoos from the marina there...think his name was mike and he took us out to a couple of different spots to do some snorkeling and that was pretty fun....left at 8 and was back by 10.....i normally would think that skidoos are ruining the environment but we got to see some of the other islands closer and there was absolutely no one around...took the ferry to st. johns and if i could afford it would go there next time....also would go back to st. thomas...the water is so beautiful and the shades change from hour to hour....glad we did not stay at blazing villa area...did not seem to be in a nice area.....also glad we did not rent a car although it did get annoying paying taxi for four people....ate couple of dinners at sapphire by the pool (not the main restaraunt)...pool serves dinner at 6 and the food was pretty good.....service can be iffy but the food was good....ordered pizza a couple of times from the place in red hook...also good.....ate dinner at lime tree at st. johns...also very good....had dinner one night at red hook but cannot remember where.....upstairs i think at the irish pub place....very good....should bring you up to speed.....also went into town (charlotte amalie) once is enough in a lifetime ...thought the shops were more unique at st. john's....thanks for the input with my questions and i hope my review helps you.....pam

Pam,
You mentioned that if you could afford it next time you would stay on St. John's.

That is how we felt, and am now searching for the best place to stay for our return hope fully next February. Did you have any place in mind ?

TMO -

I'm not Pam 🙂 but, we've had similar experience. On our return visits to the Virgin Islands we have stayed on St. John in lieu of St Thomas.

Our first visit to St John we stayed at the Westin. A fine resort...we had no complaints, but it's living for a week in a hotel room... We did not rent a car for the week, rather took taxi's with no problem...rented a car one day to tour the island.

On our last visit we rented a villa and a jeep. Now, that's the way to do it if you can swing the finances. Depending on the season and the number in your party the costs can be similar or cheaper than a hotel. There's a wide range in prices depending on the facilities in the villa. We had four people during high season and found the villa to be less expensive than two rooms at the Westin. It was a wonderful experience. It's the only way for us from now on. We had a beautiful beach villa with all the comforts of home, kitchen, coffee maker, lots of space, seperate bedrooms for the kids, plus...a wonderful sunset view, a pool of our own, a hot tub, and a family of iquanas to boot. There are many, many rental companies dealing with villas in St John - we used Lisa at Vacation Vistas and we were very pleased. See http//vacationvistas.com/
Check it out it's a great alternative to a hotel.

Good luck.
