Honeymoon Day 1

With the wedding being a complete success we were off to the Austin airport at 4:00 a.m. Yes I said 4:00 A.M. For those of you that know me, I never get up that early – unless I’m in labor, then of course I have no choice.

Checking in was smooth; we bought several magazines and boarded at 5:45 for our quick trip to Dallas. I am not a huge fan of flying, another of my quirks. I was ready for a Budlite before the captain turned off the seat belt sign. I’m also one of those people that read along with the steward as they go over the safety information. I’m the one that isn’t afraid to raise my hand and ask questions. I’ve given up asking the steward to park me on top of the “black box” (they always recover the black box) for some reason they don’t like revealing that information. Dallas was a breeze, hardly any lay over and the flight was smooth. Arriving in Puerto Rico four hours later was great – just one more flight and we officially begin the honeymoon!! During our lay over in Puerto Rico we were serenaded by a colorful group of young people – nice surprise and they stopped for pictures. Being that I don’t enjoy flying I was taken aback when told that we would be walking to our plane, the very SMALL plane!! After seeing the plane that would take us to what I believed was heaven, I wanted a budlite (two would have been even better). We boarded, I was too concerned to notice the heat, then I heard the steward say ‘Due to the short flight time there would be NO BEVERAGE SERVICE” I grabbed my new husband’s arm and didn’t let go until we were safely on the ground. The view was amazing from the plane, but I looked forward to the views from the ground.

After landing in St. Thomas I was expecting to see the airport straight out of ‘Seven Nights and Six Days” (I think that’s the right name of the Harrison Ford movie). The airport was nice, not as bad as what I had read on the message boards. We immediately started looking for a jeep, we hadn’t completely decided on a rental until we had time to really discuss what we wanted to do during our stay. In less then twenty minutes we were the proud lessee of a blue Jeep Wrangler. I could smell the testosterone oozing from my husband. Being the Texas cowboy of my dreams I knew he wouldn’t settle for a compact.

We found the Whyndham easily and were happily greeted by the staff. We drove to the main entrance where our luggage was unloaded and while hubby parked the jeep, I checked in. Walking in to the Whyndham the first thing I noticed was the beautiful, Caribbean style motif and warm, welcoming faces. Check in went better then expected – I asked if it were possible to get a room upgrade and I was glad to have asked because we went from a regular room to an ocean view. The staff took us to our room in a cart and brought in our bags, gave us a tour of our room and told us how to find the pool, restaurant and beach. We did not go with the all-inclusive plan as we looked forward to trying all the restaurants that we learned about on the message boards. We unpacked, freshened up and took the 99 steps (yes we counted) down to check out the pool area before heading off to dinner. The pool & beach were just as nice as the pictures we found online – if anything it was better then we expected. We took the shuttle down to the parking lot and headed to dinner. Our first dining experience was at the “Toad and the Tart” - The owner welcomed us and we were seated in the very quaint dining room. Hubby had the meatloaf; mashed potatoes and seasoned veggies and I had chicken strips with onion rings. The meal was excellent! No regrets whatsoever – the owner also happily gave us information about other local hangouts.

The honeymoon was off to a roaring start and we both were asleep before our heads hit the pillow. Romantic? Maybe not, but after living off a handful of sleep over the previous week (or more) we were exhausted.

I’m sorry this is turning out to be a novel! No I’m not expecting the movie rights to be purchased anytime soon. haha

No - Although we did go during the off season. That is what made it possible.

Don't worry about the Wyndham - You will love it
