I know that it is off season this time of year but my boyfriend and I wanted to visit down there anyway.
My question is I heard some of the places shut down during this time, is that true and will it be a lot of them?
We have looked into the weather and we know could be some rain and that is no biggie and we also track the possible storm systems and they seem okay for then and the history for that time of year has seemed ok too. But just wanted to check see if there are any concerns for weather that maybe we missed?
We are staying at the EBR for this time as well :).
Hi Rose, It sounds like you've done your homework concerning the weather. We have been to St. Thomas four or five times in August and September and have never had any problems with hurricanes. It is a little wetter than when we go in April but we find the island a lot greener. We will be heading down Aug 26 through the 7.
As far as closings we spend most of our time in the Red Hook area so I can't really speak about closings in Charlotte Amalie but because of the cruise ships coming into port I don't think much will be closed. In Red Hook everything has been open on our previous visits. I know there are some restaurants on St. John that are closed during this time but with so many great places it shouldn't be a problem.
Have a great trip,
Bill and Sue
On St. Croix, only a few places are closed. There are few tourists here now, and hotel rates are down on all the islands. If I lived up north, I'd only visit during off season.
Weather is on the dry side, but brief showery weather is starting to appear.
Is there a map that shows the locations of the resorts and such online? The only maps we have been able to find are very very limited on what it shows.
I am just curious what all is in walking distance from the EBR where we will be staying next week.
By the way, this forum has been great with information, really glad I found it :o).
Hello Rose,
Off Season has its benefits... lower hotel rates, fewer people, less cruise ships... 🙂
As for places closing... the majority will be open. For shopping in town & Havensight the hours are affected by the volume of cruise ships (primarily Havensight) and so some stores close when there are no ships in. As for as restaurants - some places do close for say 2-3 weeks during off season... this applies to a few places not all. If you have a particular place you wanted to have dinner at you might call the same day or day before to make a reservation (just to make sure they are open). Otherwise things will be as they are any other month.
Not much in walking distance (St. Thomas is not really a walking friendly place; lots of hills and mountains). You could walk to Brewers Bay or take the bus or short taxi ride and also perhaps to town (in the opposite direction from Brewers Bay)... these two areas would take about 8-10 minutes to drive. Everything else as far as beaches/attractions/dining would require roughly a 15-40 minute drive. You might look into renting a car; because its off season you should find specials or lower rates.
