We are days away from coming to St. Thomas! Are travelers checks a good idea, and widely accepted or is cash better? Are credit cards generally accepted there as well?
Shari
Dear Shari,
This has been a subject freuequently raised on this forum and you might want to do a search on "credit cards" to get to previous posts.
Credit cards are generally accepted in restaurants, supermarkets and stores but of course with the exception of smaller establishments and convenience stores, etc. Traveller's cheques are accepted but, as I posted a while back, I have a problem with my bank's policy of holding the funds for clearing for 10-12 days which is pretty outrageous!
There are ATMs all over the place so restocking on cash won't be a problem. Hope this helps. Oh, and have a wonderful vacation wherever you're staying on STT!
Travelers checks are old folks money. Most businesses want nothing to do with them. They are cumbersome and not easily exchanged. The only person I know who uses travelers checks is my "great aunt Laverne". She uses them when going on the silver seniors bus tour to Branson.
Credit cards and cash.
