We are coming to STT in a few weeks and will be staying for 5 days, however I dont think we are going to rent a car. I am just curious on transporting a 10 month old if we take taxi's or shuttles. Do the taxi's have seatbelts and will they allow time to install a carseat..what about the shuttles?

Also, I hear the taxi's charge per person..does that include infants and toddlers?

Thanks!

Jaimie

Taxi's are per person to a specific destination. Age doesn't matter. You will need to bring your own car seat, as taxis don't provide them. They are required for a child under 2. Won't be able to ride in any of the safari buses, as they don't have seat belts. The taxi vans and cars do, though. However, they may not want to wait for you to install a child seat, as time is money to them. You will be better of renting a car. Or, better yet, leave the kid with relatives and then you will have a 'real' vacation. You could even sleep right thru the night!

Hello Jaimie,

From Taxi Regulations:
Children under six (6) years old will pay half price.

I called a friend who is a taxi driver on STT and they said:

If you use a car seat then you pay full fare for the baby/car seat because the car seat takes up a seat in the van or car.

If you hold your baby on your lap/in your arms you will not be charged for the baby. Person with baby in lap/in arms can only ride in the back seat.

I then asked... so doesn't the driver get a ticket if stopped by a police officer since car seats are the law and they said EHHHHHHH if you need a taxi and you have a baby you can hold them on your lap, sit in the back seat, its not a problem.

I then said, if the person has a car seat and wants to use it... they said no problem just expect to pay full fare for the baby/car seat spot.

The shuttles - I assume you mean safari buses. They wouldn't be an option because there are no seat belts, its open air. Stick with vans, car taxis or rent a car.

Rent a car, rent a car, rent a car.

It's a lot more convenient than trying to locate a taxi when you want to move. You will save money and aggravation, in my opinion. Especially with your infant in tow.

You can ask a taxi driver to drop you off and pick you up for some extra cash, but the way to go is on your own. Rent a car.

And be careful of the sun, it's hotter this close to the equator - especially for the very, very young!

Thanks!

I am convinced to rent a car! We didnt want to spend the money on one, but I realize it will be much more convienent with two little kids. I cant wait! We will be in STT in one week! My 3yr old won't stop asking when we are going to St. Thomas Island. He wants to see the ocean so badly.

With four of you, it will be chaeper to rent a car than paying for taxis. Some quick math:

Staying at, say, the Marriott, in one day:
Go to town for a little shopping = $16 ($4 ea.)
Back to the Marriott = $16
Go to Magens Beach = $32 ($8 ea.)
Back to hotel = $32
Out to dinner in town = $16 ($4 ea.)
Back to hotel = $16

Total - $128...and that's just for one day! I can rent a car for a whole WEEK for $149.99!!

That is so sweet!!! I know he is just going to love the beautiful waters. It's great that he can appreciate the anticipation of the trip at such a young age!

...and thanx, Marty for the math. Taxis are great for a jaunt, but for an entire stay, it can get rather expensive. Some people may use them for the convenience, even if they DO rent a car - for instance, on a big cruise ship day, when there is hardly any parking in town, and you want to shop... you can have a taxi take you down and then take you back to your hotel or villa.

Have a great trip.

We are traveling to St.John the end of June ( carnival time ) with our 2 yr old and I have found out that Dependable car rental on St. Thomas will rent a vehicle with a car seat for free. This solves the problem of taking ours with us. We'll just get to the airport using our seat and then Dependable rental will pick us up at the airport. If you have found any other companies I would really like to compare what is available. We know our way around and will probable rent a minivan (we have 6 people to shlep part of the time)and take the car ferry to St. John and have safe transportation the whole week we'll be there.
