I'm getting married on St Thomas in January. Does anyone have any ideas on how to pack a wedding dress? I'm flying AA out of Wisconsin, I called the airline, but they were really no help.

I've seen alot of brides carry them on in very large dress bags but they have to put them in the overhead compartment (unless you have a nice flight crew then they let them hang them in first class) so take a really good steamer 🙂

Hello Hilary,
I got married this past February in St. John. We traveled on US Airways from Vermont, thru New York to St. Thomas. I carried my wedding dress in it's wedding dress bag all the way, USAirways was very good about storing it in the first class closet upon entering the plane, once we arrived in St. John I hung it in the bathroom, cranked the shower on hot shut all the doors and steamed it out. It came out great! On the way home I shoved it in my suitcase so I didn't have to deal with it on the way home and then had it pressed and sealed once we returned and who knows when I'll ever take it out again! I have to admit you get a lot of attention when your arm is raised high above your head carrying a white sealed bag with your wedding dress thru the airports. A big pain in the butt but definately worth it seeings on the way home they lost our luggage. My biggest fear was losing our luggage on the way down with the dress in it. Carrying it in hand is the only way to assure it's arrival to your wedding destination. Good luck!

Hi Hilary,

I got married on St. John last month and did the same thing as Jill. Hand carried it down there in the dress bag and packed it in my luggage on the way home. I bought a small hand held steamer to steam it when I got down there. I flew Delta and both flight crews said I could hang the dress in the closet and didn't give me any trouble. It really is the safest way to go.

I am also going to St. Thomas to get married. My question is, did you have to fly first class for them to put your dress in the first class closet? I am worried about checking my dress in with my luggage.

thanks!

We did not fly first class and they put my dress in the closet on both segments of our flight without any problems. I wouldn't check your dress in case your luggage goes missing. Same thing with your fiance...have him put the clothes he is going to wear in his carry on.

girls, girls, girls! relax, chickies. i did the same as you--married on the st.j, relax--travel with the gown as carry on. i stashed mine in the same bag as the rest of my clothes. yes, i freaked when i opened the bag. my husband hung the gorgeous semi-wrinkled confection up and with the moisture in the air, the gown dewrinkled within a day.

whoa, you think. that's pretty cavalier treatment of a wedding dress. mmhmm. but i was beautiful on my wedding day, without a thought about wrinkles. follow your bliss and best of luck.

I had the same concern and decided to rent my dress from La Ve's Shoes & Boutique in St. Thomas. They have beautiful dresses and are located right next to the court house where you have to go for your license anyway. You can call them at (340) 777-9477. They have a lot of dresses in inventory!!!
