Greetings:
As everyone knows our Pet with Wings is our most successful program at the shelter. Last year alone we sent 197 animals to our sister rescues and various adopters. We were looking forward to breaking that record this year and getting more dogs to their new homes. We have been met with many challenges funding and the temperatures being a couple of them. The Pet With Wings Program is funded by donations only. When we run out of money we cannot send the animals. We have been very lucky that many people have always stepped up and financially assisted with that problem. As everyone knows the temperatures here over the past four months have been relentless. If the temperature is over 85 degrees anywhere the plane is on the tarmac then we cannot transport the animals.
This week we are finally seeing a break but we are now met with another challenge. The temperatures are fine but the airlines schedule makes it unable to transport animals to New York and Boston until the week of November 10th due to their cargo flight schedules and the type of planes that they are flying. It appears that some planes are not equipped to fly animals in cargo. On November 7th that will change and we should be able to get the dogs out that following week
We need help in the following areas to save these animals and others because the animals keep coming through the doors and we have no space.
1. Travelers needed who are flying to Boston, New York, Connecticut or Pittsburgh on American or Delta who are willing to take a dog under the plane. You would need to check and see if your connecting flight through Miami or New York to Boston or JFK can take animals in the bottom of the plane.
2. FOSTERS NEEDED FOR THESE DOGS WHO WILL BE LEAVING THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 10th. That will give us some kennel space for the multitude of dogs that continue to come through our doors.
3. Donations. It costs us approximately $125 to $200 to transport a dog. Anyone knowing of a private plane willing to take one or two dogs. The cost of chartering a plane is cost prohibitive, we have checked.
We have been trying for months to get these animals out and have been met with one problem after another. Please find it in your hearts and homes to foster one of our adoptable animals until they can get transported to the states. Our Rescues are waiting.
If anyone knows of volunteers who can assist us in the states with animals when they arrive in New York, please contact us via this email address or [email protected].
Again, we are pleading for FOSTERS for these wonderful dogs for approximately 2 weeks only. Please contact Lisa or Rhea at the shelter (340-775-0599) we are in a desperate situation.
Thank you.
