My husband and I spent some time in St. Croix several years ago and fell in love. He has asked that his cremated remains be scattered in a specific area off of a beach on St. Croix. I'm planning to take a cruise that will port for the day in St. Thomas and would like to charter a boat to take me to the location for the scattering. Can anyone tell me if this possible to do in a day and where I could begin my search for this charter?
Thank you.

Beth,
I'm sorry for your loss. I would suggest taking the seaplane over from STT and then getting a boat here to take you where you need to go. Taking a boat from STT to STX would probably be expensive, if you can do it. It's forty miles across the second deepest trench on the planet. It would also take quite a while. Hope this helps a little.

Beth,
I'm so sorry for your loss! I agree with Ric about flying over. My parents took a cruise that arrived early in St Thomas and they took a taxi to the airport and caught the earliest small plane over to St Croix (I can't think of the name, but it's the only one I believe) for the day, then caught another one at around 4 in the afternoon to get back to St Thomas. This small plane left earlier in the morning than the seaplane-- not sure if it still does since this was 5 years ago. It gave them several hours on St Croix, where they rented a car and drove to places on the island they remembered from when they had lived there years earlier. They had made reservations for the airplane and car earlier and they had no trouble. You could take a taxi out to the beach you need to go to from the airport. Maybe someone on this board could tell you who to contact that rents boats for excursions. Good luck with what you are trying to do!

My condolences, Beth. Please insure that it is legal to inter cremains at the location you have in mind. I found out with my mom's that one cannot just scatter ashes anywhere.

The various options for getting from STT to STX are:

Seabourne Airlines. They have several flights a day, but are heavily booked and don't always have space available when you want it.

Private charter flights. There are a variety of small aircraft that are available for travel between these two islands. The typical price is about $350 per round trip flight the aircraft has to make between the two islands. This is a flat rate for the aircraft, so you can take as many passengers along at that rate as the aircraft has passenger seats for (typically 5... larger planes have a higher rate per flight). If you will be remaining on STX for much of the day, it might require two trips for the aircraft to deliver you and then pick you up. Sometimes the plane can stay and wait for you if you are there a limited time and they don't have other flight obligations.

The fast ferry when it is running. This is a seasonal thing and at the moment it is uncertain when a ferry service will resume between STT and STX. This is the most economical way to go between the islands when available.

My condolences as well, Beth. Realistically, the two best options are:

Cape Air, which involves getting to the STT airport and lands at the STX airport where you could get a taxi. As stated, there are a few more flights.

Seaborne Airlines, which departs from the waterfront in Charlotte Amalie and lands in Christiansted. Depending on where you need to go, this might be more convenient.
