* We're going to be at Cinnamon Bay (flying into St. Thomas). Should we rent a car (there are 4 of us). Can we see the island without a 4-W drive? How expensive is it to take a taxi from the airport to the ferry on St. Thomas.. Is it better to rent a car on St. JOhn OR rent at the airport, ferry it over to St. John?
We would go into Cruz Bay a few times and would want to go to beaches...we will always be traveling with 4 people.

You would find it cheaper to rent a car. Taxi drivers charge by the person.

You don't need a four wheel drive vehicle. On a weekly deal you shouldn't have to pay much above $35 per day for a vehicle. Rent on STT then take the ferry over. Do check with your rental company most allow you to use the car on either island, but some don't.

Enjoy.

Taxi rates are posted on the home page for this board. It really is dependent on how long you plan to stay and rent a car. If you stay a week or longer it probably comes out a little cheaper to rent on STT. Dependable car rental is a very nice local company that I would highly recommend. If you take the Car Barge, I would recommend buying a oneway ticket each way. It is more expensive, but if you buy a round trip ticket both voyages must be on the same company's ferry which can be confusing and incovenient.

I think that you might incur a little less expense if you take taxis, but sometimes you tend to be reluctant to do spur of the moment trips when shelling out cash. I just treat the car as a fixed expense that makes the trip more fun and is payed for by the inexpensive stay at Cinnamon Bay. The other alternative is to rent a car for a few days on St John, just for exploring.

I always rent a jeep and have never needed 4-wheel drive. The backseat of a Wrangler might be a little cramped. On the East end, the road is well paved all the way to Salt Pond and the other dirt roads toward the southwest don't take you anywhere particularly interesting IMO.

The food at the Tree Lizzard Restaurant leaves a little to be desired, so I would imagine that you may want to get elsewhere for eating more often than you expect. Even though Cinnamon Bay is now on the tourist's radar, and the area around Peter's Bay has been more developed, I still think it is much closer to the old St John experience than anywhere else on the island. Are you staying in a cabin, tent, or bare site?

Have fun.

We rent a vehicle on STJ. I rent on STJ for a few reasons, the main one being that should I have car trouble, I definitely want to be dealing with a company on the same island. I also like to be able to park in the agency's lot when we're in Cruz Bay. And personally, driving on STT freaks me out a bit. You could probably do fine without a vehicle staying at Cinnamon Bay just using taxis to get around. You might want to rent a vehicle for a couple of days to get around the island a bit more. If you're not going in peak season you can probably find a vehicle to rent just walking up to a few places in Cruz Bay in the morning. We wouldn't get anything but 4WD. Most of the time you won't need it, but if you need it and don't have it, there's no substitute. Roads are steep and windey. When they're wet, they can be very tough.
