I plan to travel to Tortola via St. Thomas. Can someone tell me best way to get from the airport to the ferries, how long it takes from the airport, and how long it takes to go thru customs?

It is a 5 minute taxi ride from the airport to Tortola Wharf - the Customs will be at the other end in Tortola - it will take as long as it takes - no predictions there.

Find out from the ferry schedule at above quick links which ferry is more convenient for you.
From STT airport to Charlotte Amalie ferry : 5-10 min, to Red Hook ferry: 30 min
In Tortola, you can either arrive at West End or Road Town, depending on where you are staying at.
Clearing customs in the BVI takes around 30-45 min. There are car rentals and taxis at either places.
The drive between Road Town and West End is an easy 30 min. However, the road from Road Town to Brewers Bay is a hair rising ride thru the mountain with steep switchbacks, pot holes, fallen rocks, and if it happens to rain heavily like it did when we were there 2 weeks ago, it makes Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland look like a walk in the park.
