Well during the week of the 24th there are so many things going on in town
HOW WILL THE TRAFFIC BE?
i remember at miracle on main street you couldn't park in town and the taxi had to let us off before the food fair and we walked
will there be any way to get to/from the airport through town from the east end?
we have to go sunday to pick up at the airport from secret harbour any idea about the traffic
also wednesday is the food fair and we have to take people to the airport
feel like letting a taxi driver do it!

also will there be a hard time getting to frenchtown at night to go to restaurants...will the roads be blocked?

Hello Ginger,

You can find the closings and parking restrictions on the VIPD web site. There is a link to it right off their home page under press releases. http://www.vipd.gov.vi/

On the 24th there is the steel pan jamboree at Lionel Roberts Stadium at 5:00pm so Mafolie Hill and around the stadium which is in Hospital Ground will be congested around the time of the event. People typically park along the road (Mafolie Hill) which leads down to the stadium. You should be fine going to the airport along the waterfront. If you are going at the same time as the jamboree expect a bit of traffic.

On the 25th in the evening the area around the Fort Christian Parking lot and downtown will be busy, congested because of the opening of the Village.

The same congestion along Mafolie Hill will exist on the 28th around 8pm for the Calypso Show.

Do remember that the main parking lot, Fort Christian Parking lot, for downtown is closed. That's where the Village is built. So parking downtown will be very difficult, next to impossible during the day that entire week whether there is a function going on or not. It will be particularly difficult to find parking on the day of the Cultural/Food Fair.

You can drive to the airport on the day of the food fair, just plan to go earlier because there will be traffic downtown during the mid-morning to afternoon. You can drive through northside and avoid it.

You have presented me with a question. My husband & I will be arriving on the 23rd and will have a rental car. We have dinner reservations for 6 o'clock on Sat. April 24th at the Mafolie Restaurant. We planned to probably arrive there around 5:30 or so to grab a cocktail at the bar.

We had originally planned on driving there, as we will have a vehicle. We will be staying at the Best Western Emerald Beach on that night. Do you think we would be wiser to take a taxi?? Or is there ample parking at the restaurant & should we have no problem getting there?

I was concerned regarding your comment about people parking on Mafolie Hill.

Also, do you know how long the steel band competition will last? Maybe we could catch some of it after dinner.

Hello Sue,

The road side parking on Mafolie Hill for the Carnival events in the Stadium is typically from around Blackbeards Castle down to the Lionel Roberts Stadium. Its not usually as high as the Mafolie Hotel/Restaurant. There is limited parking at the hotel and it is road side parking but you should be fine. As mentioned the Stadium is basically at the foot of the hill so you will run into some congestion when driving to the Hotel if you are coming from Best Western through downtown Charlotte Amalie and up Mafolie Hill. It won't be terriable but do expect some.

You should be able to hear the steel band music from Mafolie so can enjoy it while having your dinner and will be able to tell if its still going on when you are through with dinner. The parking situation down by the stadium will be tough and walking from Mafolie Hotel is quite a hike and not recommended. If you can get a closer spot down the hill that's fine, pull off the road as much as possiable. The area behind the stadium is shady so don't wonder around, stick to the main road. The entrance/ticket booth area is on the east side of the stadium.

Hello Ginger,

You should be fine on the Sunday airport trip. And yes on Wednesday your cousin can drive through town. The Cultural Fair starts at 8am. He should be at the airport 2 hours before departure so make sure enough time is left to drive from SH to the airport with the consideration in mind that there may be some congestion on the Waterfront. Same for the 2pm drop off.

Have fun. You are going to know that airport road well!! 🙂
