I will be staying on tortola in the near future and was wondering if a 4 wheel drive is necessary on the island. I have been to the usvi many times but never tortola. I will be staying on the northwest side of the island, and I am just unfamiliar with the lay of the island.

You'll probably be able to get more info on the BVI at this site:

The answer is YES. You definitely need 4WD on Tortola. Their roads are worse than STJ on some areas.

I've been going to Tortola since 1990. Sorry to disagree but 4WD is nice but not necessary.

In general I agree with JimW. I can't think of an area on the NW end of the island (Apple Bay/Long Bay/Smuggler's Cove) that requires a 4WD. It's also pretty easy to access most other island hot spots (Road Town, Cane Garden Bay, etc.) by staying on the N and S coast roads, which are close to sea level.

That said, there are certain hillside villas that do require a 4WD to access during or immediately after a rain. The villa owner and/or rental management comp. are the best sources to learn about those. A 4WD also comes in handy on steep areas of Sage Mountain and Ridge Roads, but I wouldn't say it's a must.

Hope this helps....
