Is it still FREE to call a toll free number (1-800, 1-888 etc.) in the US from St. Thomas??
Yes, there may be a surcharge on a pay phone or in a hotel room as anywhere else I have seen.

And a few toll free numbers won't work from the VI, you get a message saying 'this number can not be reached from your area'.

Maybe its just me but I have never been able to get my Continental US calling card toll free # (the one you have to call before you type in your access code & phone number you want to dial) to work from STT / Water Island. I use my cell phone to call back home. I do also purchase a calling card from Gourmet Gallery just to have in case cell phone not working or I want to make a terrestrial call. Gourmet Gallery doesn't keep their calling cards out on display. You have to ASK for them.
And there are some toll-free numbers for companies that don't work from outside the continental U.S. Kind of a bummer, but then I search and find the direct number and just dial long-distance.
