Has anyone else had the problem of overplanning your trip to STT???

Today my little 7-year-old daughter said to me, Mommy, I can't keep up with everything we're going to do in St. Thomas.....

Made me take a breath and think that I must be overplanning. I'm thinking I'm gonna take a step back and un-plan all of my planning!!!!

Any thoughts about this? I'll be traveling alone with my daughter as well as my 15-year-old son. I like to be spontaneous, but I figured with kids going I should be a bit (or a lot) more structured.

We only have 10 days 13 hours 45 minutes left to go! Either way of course we'll have fun, but I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Be spontaneous and just do it! You'll have more fun. It's a vacation afterall. Structure is for the real world here on the mainland. You will be on island time, slow and relaxed. Once things are structured you are only putting pressure and won't be enjoying yourself or your vacation. relax, calm down and enjoy yourselves. You'll be happier and not stressed out.

Get your kids a milkshake at Udder Delight and a 'loaded' one for you on the way to Magens Bay. Once you get there, kick back, relax, and take it all in. YOU ARE ON VACATION AFTERALL!

I just got back today after 6 days in STT. No plans necessary. Just let the trade winds move you -- relax. Like Patrick says, it's vacation...

The only plans I made on my last visit was to make sure I hit STJ for a day. I played it by ear the other three days and had a blast...AND relaxed.

Take your list with you. Every morning over breakfast discuss what you'd like to do that day. Then do it. If you plan a full day and by noon you just want to sit on the beach -- change your plans.

The only exception are day trips that need reservations. Plan those the day before and make your reservations.

You'll have a greaat time -- RELAX.

Hello Sheri,

I think a flexiable plan is good... when you get into the hour by hour rigid plans then the pressure sets in, disappointment if you don't get to do everything intended... and thus not a vacation. Loosen up your plan, put your top activities that you really want to do up to the top of a list and each evening decide from your list what you might do the next day and do it... if you set out to do 4 things one day and it doesn't happen because the kids want to stay at the beach or whatever then don't worry about it. Have a great time.

My mom was in over planner. I remember on our trip to the Rockies, I saw a turn off for visiting the sight of Laura Ingall's Little house on the Prarie. I wanted to go so bad. Hey I was 10 years old and she was my hero. It didn't fit into the plan though. My one great disappiontment. Take the time to listen what the kids want to do spur of the moment. They'll have ideas different than yours once they see with thier own eyes.
Sorry about spelling this morning.

Great point, Eve! Thank you for that! I'll certainly keep that in mind.

Hmmm, I'm just imagining what that might be like with a 15 y.o. boy and a 7 y.o. girl, those "wonderfully behaved" kids of mine. I have no doubt that it will be an interesting, fun, relaxing, special, once-in-a-lifetime trip for all of us. And I've certainly decided to lighten up and not worry so much about a "plan."

Thanks all!
Only 8 days and 10 hours left to go!!! (love my countdown calendar)

You'll be surprised at the enjoyment your son will get in catering to the star-filled eyes of the little one. Brothers and sisters seem to get along great on vacations cause everything is so new. He is old enough to understand the enjoyment of indulgement for his little sis.
