Had a couple of customers recently that sat down at by bar. They looked sort of sullen, so I asked if they were enjoying their trip to the Virgin Islands. They said that they were pretty disappointed with St . John, and couldn't wait to go home. "With what?", I asked. "High Prices?". They said no, they were from New Jersey, and their beaches where much nicer. We didn't have facilites at our beaches! Or lifeguards! And some of the beaches, you have to walk to get to!
I guess it takes all kinds of people to make the world go round...

Nyestreet....

Yes, you're absolutely right. Give me a beach, a good book and a cooler and i'm extremely happy.

Wildwood is known for their beaches. They keep them very clean, they have lifeguards and the water has been very clean in the past few years. I love sitting on the beach and watching the kids, the boats, the fudgie-wudgie man, the seagulls (yes even them) etc.

You just can't compare the NJ shore or any shore with the clean, turquoise caribbean waters of the caribbean.

Some people just need to lighten up a little bit when they go away. It's a fast passed world and life is short.

Seriously, I love the beaches at - GASP!! - Lake Ontario. Long, long (couple miles) stretches of firm sand to walk, the zebra mussels have cleaned the water to where it's almost blue in the sunlight sometimes, the water is warm and shallow, etc. I've even shown pictures to friends in STX and they are shocked at how lovely the beach is.

That said, I would never compare this to any of the beaches in the islands. I'm just glad that it's there for my (all too brief) summers in upstate NY.

P.S. The beaches in Delaware are great too, I'd still rather be in the islands!!

Joanne, you reminded me of the big beautiful empty beaches me and my Dad saw on Lake Superior on a road trip to Minnesota, while driving thru Michigans upper peninsula in 2001, 3 months before he passed away. Thank you the whole trip is a very fond memory.

You're most welcome!!! My mom loved the beaches as well, and she passed just two years ago, so I share you fond memories.

Now, if we could only shake off this abominably unseasonable weather - it's currently 34 degrees with snow, sleet and freezing rain AND we aren't expected to see the 50s until next Wednesday.

I need some rum!

I love the gulf of Mexico. Particularly Port Aransas, Texas. It's an island. It's very animal friendly (everyone has dogs with them), the beaches seem clean, as does the water, and the entire island is just so laid back. The salty air smells so good. However, it's definitely not even in the same league as the islands. To me, the islands truly are heaven on earth. In fact, when I think about our time there, it makes my heart sick that I'm here in Dallas instead of there.

East Ender, how did you know? I snorkeled White Rock Lake just the other day! 😉

Actually, speaking of White Rock Lake, I was watching the show The First 48 on A&E last night. (the show is about the first 48 hours of a murder investigation and they follow different homicide units around the country). They were in Dallas, and there was a body found at White Rock Lake. 🙁

I also grew up in NJ, and spent many summers 'down the shore' and loved it. That said, STJ (and other awesome blue water caribbean islands) have spoiled NJ beaches for me. The beaches in NJ are beautiful, but I need to see BLUE WATER. There really is no comparison...its like comparing apples and oranges.

But, hey, if everyone "GOT' St. John, WE would be swimming there because there were no flights available, and sleeping on a beach, cuz all the villas would be booked!!

Wow....we live in Ocean City and LOVE the beach there. As a matter of fact, I grew up in OC and could not imagine living anywhere else......except St John. My wife and I plan to retire there. We have some great beaches at the Jersey Shore but nothing like STJ. We were married on the beach in STJ and go back each year for out anniversary. People like those, give people from Jersey a bad rap!

Gari Ann: If you can sail on White Rock Lake, you can sail anywhere! But snorkeling with the Lady of the Lake around? Too scary! Not to mention the water snakes. Yuck.
