So DH and I are headed off in a just under two weeks. We would like to be on the frugal side of things a bit and perhaps bring some of our food. However, I think that might put us into that check baggage crew. I don't really want to check.

We are only staying 3 full days and one half day.

I would like to at least eat two lunches and 1 dinner that we make ourselves when we stay at Maho Bay Camps. Are the shops in Cruz Bay that outrageous? Whatever I would bring would fit in a cooler. I wonder if the extra $$$ I would spend on groceries actually on STJ would be so significant that is worth the hassle of checking luggage.

Any thoughts?

BTW we still need to pack our toiletries and sunscreen so we have some concern about those liquid requirements. One thing I am thinking about is coconut milk and pineapple juice. I wont' be able to make frozen drinks - but at least they will be yummy goodness!

With the new TSA regs - it is almost impossible not to check

It can be done, but when it is all said in done the minutes you save getting through TSA with no liquids - you spend at a store in the VI buying.

I was always a one of those who said - if it does not fit in the overhead it is not going. But those days are gone

It is possible to not check, I did it in August. 5 days and food. Not a single problem. You just have to follow the rules.

You will only need the basics for that short of a trip. You will be able to get by with TSA approved sized toiletries available at most pharmacies.

You can carry on a small rolling cooler as long as you don't pack any liquid icepacks. I just vac sealed everything and packed the cooler tight with newspaper and the food, don't leave any extra room.

You will be able to buy everything you need on island, it will be a little more expensive from home but since you are staying at Maho, if you bring frozen food you will have to keepit cold in the cooler as there is no fridge and no blender unless you pack one.

For two lunches and one dinner forget bringing foodstuffs with you! Stop in at Marina Market before you board the Red Hook ferry to STJ (it's directly across the street from the entrance) and you'll find everything you need - including pineapple juice and coconut milk! Have a great trip. Cheers!
