My group is gong to charter a sailboat for the day in STJ and we were wondering what is the typical tip offered to the crew (2 people in this case)? Is it a % of the cost or a fixed amount?
Opinions/thoughts please.
Thanks in advance!
For a two-crew trip, I'd go $100 tip....assuming they deserve it, of course, but odds are, they WILL!
Usually 15%-20% depending on service 🙂

And please remember that on most boats the crew gets a per diem wage which is minimal.
Tips is their salary.
The guys and gals usually put on a big smile and treat you well. Like you are the first and best group they ever had. And then they get up the next morning and do it again.
Spoken from a parent who had a child that tried to live that life for a year.
I agree with being generous. I just figure the tip into the overall cost of the trip. If it's too expensive - just don't go. Don't stiff the crew because you could only justify the base expense for the trip out of your budget.
Of course, I'm in the service industry as a profession - so I fully understand that those assisting me aren't doing it just for fun - they've got bills to pay and lives to lead away from their job. I've been blessed to be able to afford the trip - I always feel obligated to give back to those who help make it a great memory - whether it's tipping a server after a meal or a crew member on a full-day adventure.
Good Luck! Have Fun!
If it's just a captain and a private charter I go 15-20% of the total, exclusive of gas (if I'm buying) and customs fees.

FWIW, the crew are the owners.
Also, I wasn't looking to be cheap, but rather do the right thing. We know tipping is expected (assuming that it was a great day - which it will be!), but I just didn't know if it typically was a % or a certain $ amount per crew member. In diving I will usually tip the individual dive masters at the end of several days a fixed $ amount. Sounds like this is a little different.
One more follow up - if we stop at one of the beach bars in the BVI for some drinks and snacks, is it typical for us to pay for the crew's beverages and/or food?
Again, thanks for the helpful feedback!
Most of the regular boats have their lunches paid for by the beach bar - just so they will keep bringing groups back
The islands have a real scratch my back and I will get yours. A good consingee (sp) or tour director has a lot perks if they keep them coming
And I think you will find that the Capt and Crew will not drink anything but sodas or water on the boat.
Please do not think I was trying to say you were looking for a short cut or being cheap. Just most folks do not realize that for the crew - tips are pretty much it.
Enjoy
We have always paid for the crew's lunch 🙂

It may also depend on the chartered yacht but being generous when you can is not a bad thing.
