What percentage is it customary to tip the crew on day sails and other excursions? If the capt. owns the boat and the first mate is hired help (not a wife for instance) who do you give the tip to? If the crew is also the owner of the boat do you tip the same?
$20 per head is a standard tip and the captain and crew split up the total equally.
Marty,
Doesn't it depend too on how many people are on the boat?
15-20% of the cost. For term charters- % of the cost of the boat, for day trips, % of per person cost. I would tip the same, owner or not, if you had good service. On day boats, usually the crew are required to split the tips, so there will be a jar or a designated receiver.
Most owners do not capt their own boat. If they do the tip should go to the crew. The crew gets payed like a waiter ir waitress, They live off tips. A payed capt might be makeing 7-8 bucks an hour. There is allot of work the tourist dont see. On the docks at 7am cleaning the boat, food prep etc. Your 8 hour trip is a 12 hour day for the capt and crew. 15-20 % is great but at least 10 bucks a head. And no it does not matter how many people. Thanks for asking deb. Have a great trip
Thanks for the info. I was thinking 20% was about right but wanted to check with those in the know. I am actually sailing on two different days with captains who own their own boats. That's why I was wondering about tipping owners, but I guess it doesn't matter if you own the boat or not, you are doing the work and deserve a good tip.
The number of people on the boat doesn't make much difference, as the more people on the boat, the more crew to split the tips. A six-pac with a captain and mate would get $60 each @ $20/head. 36 passengers on a larger boat like the BOB Underwater Adventure (underwater motorscooters) which has 12 crew, would still equal $60 each. But, remember, much like a waiter or waitress, the crew lives on tips, so if they do a great job, tip them well If not, tip them less. It's really up to the individual.
