Tipping - Day Sails/Fishing Charter

*Just wondering - what are the tipping guidelines for a day sail for 5 people(6 hours) and a fishing charter for 4 people (4 hours)?

I have read several postings on this issue. It seems the general answer is to follow the 15-20% (of the cost) guideline.

I also had a conversation with one of the companies that books some of these trips and he verfied this range was the most appropriate. He indicated to me that the boat operators felt that a 10% tip sucked.

Tend to agree

< 10% never
10% - if you are disatisfied
15% - if they met 100% of your expectations
20% - if they exceed your expectations
> 20% - a trip of a lifetime and it was because of the crew

Remember Capt Crew get a small per diem wage most of the time from the owner, but the salary is really the tips they receive. And living in VI is not cheap.
