3 must-do hiking adventures in the British Virgin Islands

The reasons to visit the British Virgin Islands are as obvious as they are many — the sugary sand beaches, the warm, crystal-clear waters, the smörgåsbord of watersports on offer: snorkeling, diving, fishing, sailing, to name a few.
What doesn’t pop up often on visitors’ must-do lists? Hiking. Which is too bad, because the BVI — made up of 60-odd islands — has some pretty spectacular landscapes worth exploring. Here are three great reasons to pack your hiking boots along with your bikini.
Gorda Peak National Park, Virgin Gorda
We’ll admit, it isn’t an easy drive to get to this park if you’re prone to carsickness. But the views from this hilly two-lane road are breathtaking — myriad inlets, with impossibly turquoise-colored bays, stretch for miles below. Set at the highest point in the middle of the island, the park encompasses 254 acres; clearly posted signs indicate the two different trailheads that lead to the 1,370-foot summit. (One trail is about 800 yards and will take around 20 minutes, the second is slightly longer.)
It’s a mildly strenuous climb that leads through what’s called a Caribbean dry forest — look for lizards, (nonvenomous) snakes, hermit crabs and even the occasional orchid. At the top is a wooden observation tower; climb up to the platform and you’ll be treated to jaw-dropping, 360-degree views of the surrounding islands.
