Ok, so after all my St. John questions and planning hubby just says hey "instead of going to St. John lets go to Disneyworld":-o. I said we were just at Disneyworld June of 2008 why would we go back so soon plus I want to go to St. John. He says we can go anytime to St. John. Wrong...So to win this argument I said ok you go to Disneyworld and Im going to St. John. He says ok then. So just maybe you will see a lonely solo woman walking around Cruz Bay. But hey at least Im in St. John. To me St. John is a place where you would have fun even going solo. Right?

Once to Disneyworld was more than enough for us! Even our kids don't have any desire to go back. But apparently about a zillion other people like it, based on the crowds when we were there 4 years ago. Ugg.

What about a completely alternate location you can both agree on? We love CO for hiking, white water rafting, horseback riding... Charleston for walking tours, food, and beaches... Arizona for golf, hiking and hanging by a pool... Northern California for biking and drinking wine... Our favorite vacays are always to an island, but there are so many other cool places to visit. It would be great if you could compromise on a place you both want to see.

What kind of stuff does he like to do on vacation? And can he do those things on STJ? If he doesn't like the water that knocks out most activities on STJ, but if he likes to try new restaurants, visit local art galleries or hike, maybe you could lure him with those.

The only thing my husband and I have in common is Disney and St. John. We have tried other vacations and states, area's and it just doesn't go well. We don't really like the same things besides the above mentioned. So I have to keep the St. John material in his face and show him pics of our last St. John trip and remind him what a great time we had. Hopefully that will do it.

lmcniel,

If you've already booked the villa then you are half-way there. Cook up a Caribbean dinner, play some steel pan music, get the blender going with some very strong drinks and even serve dinner in your bathing suit. Maybe after a few cocktails he'll give in, then you rush to your computer and book the flights. Vacation planned!

Best of luck!

Molly

Oh, I'm on to the plane tickets now. What has to be decided is if I will be buying 1 or 2 tickets. That is yet to be determined.

There is no way at the age of 40 I'd choose Disney and hoards of crowds and screaming kids over a tropical vacation in the Caribbean, but to each his own. Have you been to Hawaii? It has a good combination of beaches/relaxation and sight-seeing that might be a good compromise for you both. Or perhaps northern California. The Big Sur area is beautiful. Or maybe Europe. There's EuroDisney in France, right?

Hey, to each his own. My daughter would rather be in Disney than St. John any day! When it comes down to it and we finally arrive in St. John, she's all smiles. Hopefully your hubby will be all smiles too! Who can't resist the beautiful scenery, water, even taking your garbage to the dumpsters! It's all great in St. John and anyone who doesn't want to go, once they get there, it's heaven.

Ok here's my new plan tell me what you think. Since hubby is hell bent on Disney I decided to work some over time if possible and do 2 trips so were all happy. I would like to come to St. John in October I'm just worried about the weather and go to Disney the first week of December. Will we potentially run into any storms and I assume the temps will be on the warmer side in October. Plane tickets from DTW to STT are only 250.00.

October is one of our favorite months to go to STJ
Water is definitely warm
It can be quiet the first half of the month - which is good for me
But as the month gets closer to November things start picking up

You can remove you weather worry by getting trip insurance

Compromise is a wonderful thing...
Personally I would held out for two trips to STJ - But I am pretty stubborn
One to chill out before I have to go to Mickey land, and one to unwind after I get back

TomB. I totally get the thing about staring with Disney then to St. John to unwind but Disney sent me a special of $49.00 /room for the first week of December only. So I'm kinda stuck. MY personal thought is to forget this whole Disney nonsense and hang out in St. John for 2 weeks instead of 2 vacations. but I'm really getting aggressive with hubby about this whole vacation thing so I cant push 2 much more or I will be going alone. ( huh, maybe not such a bad idea) I think I should shoot for a mid October visit and get insurance. Still considered a slow and cheaper time to visit. Ok on to more planning........

Hasn't he learned yet that a happy wife is good for a happy life. Just buy some sexy night gowns and tell him you are wearing them on STJ any normal guy will be there but then again he wants to go see Mickey it might not work. LOL

Well, it's official hubby told me today he is most likely NOT going to St. John with me in October. He thinks a trip in October and one in November is to close together. ( I said are you kidding me?) I said you know how many people would kill for 2 vacations. Anyways, I don't want to come earlier due to the heat and humidity that's why I picked mid to late October. Well, instead of going myself and being lonely I think I will ask my 23 year old daughter. Get in some mom and daughter time. If she declines then I don't know what I will do.

You and your daughter will have a wonderful time! I count my blessing that my husband likes to travel as much as I do but also doesn't mind when it's girls only. We went to Italy in December, STT in January, San Francisco (girls only) for the Chinese New Year in February. Nothing planned but a few weeks in the Bahama's in June and to visit our son in Frankfurt sometime in October. We will have to make it back to STT sometime this spring to do some updating at our place., can't wait to get back to our little slice of heaven.

Have a great trip, I doubt that your daughter will back out of the opportunity to go to STJ with her mom alone, I know that my 20 year old daughter would jump at the chance!

oh my gosh!

this is a long thread. I want to add my 2 cents too, so here goes:

I usually try to get to St. John once a year. Last year instead I took a family trip with my whole family to Disney World, and the Disney cruise. I had such a wonderful time.... but it was not St. John. I missed it so badly, as I had just come through a rough year myself. But my family is very important to me and I know that being together was a very important part of this trip. However, Mickey pales in comparison to St. John.

I am happy to say, that I am headed back down to St. John in May, for 2 weeks of well deserved unwinding.

I say this: If I was asked to go back to Disney World again this year instead of St. John, I would graciously decline, pack my carry on and get into island time as soon as I could. You will have a wonderful time alone. You will also find many friendly people to hang out with should you choose too. The drinks will be cold, the breeze warm, the water blue, the sand soft and Mickey is no-where to be found nor his hordes of faithful followers.

Enjoy...enjoy

Dean

Thanks Dean for your input. Glad you understand my dilemma I have with this Disney thing and hubby. I just don't get it at all. Were going back to Disney Nov. 29th for a week and all I want to do is come back to St. John in October. That's it and hubby is trying to make this a federal case of why don't go to St. John. I have been making plans with the villa rental agent so it is a for sure go for me. Hubby doesn't think I will go without him( he doesn't know me very well after 22 years). All I can say is the day I leave he will come home from work to a note saying be back in a week and don't forget to feed the dog...

Seems to me there is a lot you and your husband don't know about each other! Enjoy yourself. There is a group that meets at the Beach Bar every week, and I am sure you can pick up some friends there. I doubt you will be lonely.
Yes, there are breezes on Gift Hill BTW.

After 22 years you would think so. We have never had this issue before as he LOVES st. john but just wants to go back to Disney instead. So I continue to plan for myself and he seems fine with that. I do hope to run into nice people I like island drinks but not a bar scene. I'm 40 years old after all. lol

What day does the group meet at the Beach Bar - Sunday Jazz Maybe?
I would love to put some faces to names

Good question TomB that would be fun. Do the regulars on this forum ever get together on St. John on a regular basis?

Actually it's a combo from this and the other forum. I think there are folks who post on both. I don't drink and hang at a bar everyday. Actually to eat! I have seen posts where the beach bar is usually the place where most forumites meet.
