Hello to all & thank you all again for the information you have so generously shared in the past. My family & I will be arriving St. John on Sunday, Nov. 19th, leaving Sunday, Nov. 26th. It appears we may have some rainy days, which is okay with the bulk of us, as I'm sure we'll find plenty of island bars to keep us entertained! However, any suggestions for the older folks or non-drinkers or my pregnant niece, in regards to things to do when it rains? Also, any last minute tips? I read on a forum months ago not to take taxi's that are brown station wagons....I believe this, but am curious as to what exactly they are or are trying to pull?
Thanks again for any information you feel inclined to share--I can't wait to visit your beautiful island!

Most people head to Cruz Bay or Coral Bay when it rains to shop, eat, and drink etc. It's also a good time to curl up with a book (or curl up with someone you like curling up with). Don't worry too much about rain. Usually when it rains down there it's a brief shower and its gone.

When it rains, we do laundry or take a shower! (You need rain to replenish the cisterns which many homes have as their only water source.)

Regarding "brown station wagon" taxis......I never heard such a thing. And, I don't recall seeing any brown station wagon taxis at least in STT.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry too much about rain. My mother was just here visiting, and she said that she thought it was going to be a rained out vacation, due to the weather reports she was reading. Basically, you can throw out the weather reports, as they always say that there will be showers. But, remember, 20 or 30% chance of showers really means 70% sunshine throughout the day!

I didn't ask you what island your staying on and are you in a resort or a villa? RE: 'brown taxi's". Where did you hear that?? I've never heard of such a thing on STT or STJ. Sounds like someone is pulling your leg to me.

Thanks for the reply..we're staying on STJ in a villa near Chocolate Hole...I heard about the brown station wagon taxi's to avoid several months ago on this forum & made a note about it. Maybe it was a hoax, but I'm still going to avoid them if I see one!

On the one day of rain that we had, we used it to ride around the island, eat lunch at Margarita Phils and shop at Wharfside and Mongoose Junction. We had a great time that day.

Wait 5 minutes or move about 1/2 a mile either way. It seems it never rains to long in one spot. Enjoy your trip!

When we were there it would often rain very briefly in the early morning... and be gone quickly leaving a beautiful rainbow to start our day! One of our favorite memories is of a downpour while we were at Trunk Bay that lasted about 20 minutes and we stayed in the water laughing and keeping warm and marveling at how we hadn't played in the rain since we were children and what we'd been missing! It moved offshore and the sun was out in full force within minutes. The rain on STJ may come and go but the fun is nonstop!!! Don't worry, be happy!

Why wait for a rainy day?

I thought your question was "What should we do differently when it rains?"

😉

We are big fans of taking a deck of cards and a couple sets of dominoes to our favorite little bar (often Shipwreck Landing) and spending the day there sipping foo-foo drinks, playing games, reading books, chatting with locals...

That said, I've been there 6 times and only one day did we have non-stop rain.

While staying at a villa on St. Thomas back in May '06 we did have one heavy rain, loved it. The maid for the villa , Carmen ,who was one of the most beautiful people I've ever met told us, " It was a married mans rain. " I never heard this before so after asking she explained that when it rains on the islands that's the time for couples to stay in bed. So I'd have to agree with Eric Clapton Let it Rain.
