My husband read in my book, "Feet, Fins and 4 Wheel Drive" to not leave any valuables in your rental car or on the beach. Are there really that many thefts on St. John? He is worried about our camera if we leave it unattended.

By the way, this book is excellent!

Crime is not an issue on STJ. The book is basically telling you what you already should know...don't give anyone cause for becoming a thief.
With apologies to to the movie Field of Dreams, "If you leave it they will take it." That applies to most places I am familiar with.

We've been 3 times so far to STJ and did hear a consistent story each time that the Maho Bay side is crime free but the Drunk/Salt/Lameshur Bay areas are more crime prone but we were told just to be sensible and don't leave anything valuable in your car when you're in those areas. As Chris said, just use your common sense and keep your valuables with you or locked up in your hotel room or locker.
