Now don't laugh, as these are important items to us. And I've learned that just because I can buy something here, I can't neccessarily buy it elsewhere. Last summer I couldn't find pita bread or garbonzo beans where I was, I went to 3 diff. grocery stores. So, given that, are the grocery stores in STJ stocked with the following:

Pita bread, flour tortillas, black beans, garbonzo beans, Tofu, frozen spinach, frozen pie shells, cilantro, Tahini, honey, frozen starwberries, fresh spinach, whole onions and salsa.

Isn't there a bread shop? We would like whole wheat bread.

Thnx!!

Hi Coden.

Some of these items are available at some places some of the time but if you'll be unhappy if they are unavailable when you're here then you should bring what you need. Stores here frequently run out of stock and often the person in charge of ordering doesn't reorder until customers complain that their desired item is missing -- and then the wait begins. Residents learn to work around unavailable items but if your shopping list is inflexible and you arrive with specific grocery expectations you will likely be frustrated. I recommend you bring what you can't live without and have fun making up the rest as you go along based on what's available when you're here.

Starfish Market has had frozen strawberries (April '04 and May '06).

Fabulous, fabulous bread at "The Deli" in Mongoose - baked fresh everyday complete with grains etc (love it) a must buy ($4.00 per loaf) Tahini, honey, onions, salsa and flour tortillas along with frozen berries (not always strawberry's though) available at Starfish Market, and frozen pie shells - sometimes 🙂 Can't help with the other items as I don't shop for them (but buy gabanzo beans in STT by the case at Pricesmart)

Thanks everyone for your replies. We ae hoping to bring just our backpacks with our clothes in them and not to have to pack a suitcase full of food. Especially canned goods, as they are heavy. We eat a lot of vegetarian meals so it would be nice to have certain things at our villa. I guess we'll just have to go with what we can find.

If I can get some good bread from The Deli and some tahini & honey, that's lunch a lot of days...good stuff!!

Thanks again!

Fresh produce is really hit or miss on STJ (mostly miss). When you find it, stock up because it might not be there the next day. It might even be worth provisioning on STT, cheaper too.

How is the Market at the Red Hook ferry for stocking up on some of the items I have above? We could ferry over there one day, I guess.

What about the Deli in Cruz Bay? What do they have in the way of pastas and salads to go?

We do plan on eating out quite a bit, and I've seen some of the menu's for some of the restaurants on STJ. Some of their vegetarian dishes really sound good...maybe we'll try to use our standard rule here...only eat 1/2 and take the other 1/2 home to be enjoyed later!

Plus we can always order veggie pizza's and keep them at the villa for those days we are being lazy by the pool.

Thnx everyone for your help!
