We're planning to rent a power boat for a full day and want to explore St John and the US Virgin Island keys around St John on our own. We can't go to the British Islands unfortunately. I'm looking for recommendations for the best snorkeling since we'll have more flexibility with our own boat. Also would like to stop at a beautiful secluded beach for a picnic lunch perhaps on one of the keys islands. Any suggestions?
We may be open to another couple joining us to cut down on the cost, we'll be on St Thomas from 9/26 through 10/2.
Thank you!

A less expensive yet still fun option would be a dingy rental. You can still do the National Park - I think Noah's Little Arks even throws in a cooler - but you will have to skip Coral Bay with this option.

sounds good....thanks!
I think the best snorkling in the USVI is at St. John's Waterlemon Key in Leinster Bay. If you are staying on STJ, you can get to it via land, and will pass by the Annenburg Plantation, which is a good visit, on the way.

Francis Bay is very good for turtles, rays and larger fish. If you have a boat, it makes reaching Whistling Cay that much easier rather than crossing Fungi Passage from Francis to Whistling. Otherwise, you need to be in fairly good shape.
It's a bit further out but if you have the boat and time...between Congo Cay and Luvongo Cay, just north of STJ, is also quite good for schools of fish and various other sites.
