My wife and I just got back from a wonderful 2 week stay on St. John's east end (Round Bay). In all of our world travels we have never been to a more beautiful and friendly place. From great breakfasts at the Donkey Diner to gourmet meals at Bourdeaux and Miz Lucy's to cheering on the Red Sox at Skinny Leg's. All of the people we met were so kind and friendly that we will be making twice yearly visits till we retire and move there full time. A big thanks to our hosts, John & Susan Gallagher (ourrentalparadise.com), whose villas throughout the Caribbean and New England simply have no equal. Paradise has been found, and we are missing it daily from our tiny island in the Pacific Northwest.
Hey, we just got back from Round Bay also- this past Tuesday. The rain did alot for the flowers out there- unusually green. Did you do any EAST END snorkling? The water was alittle cloudy from the rain, but always beautiful anyways.
Please do not confuse ST. JOHN, VI with "St. John's". Two different islands, two different countries.
Since he just spent two weeks there, I'd doubt that he's confused about where he was. I think he made a very common error in calling it St John's rather than St. John. I think most people knew what he meant. I'm glad he had a good time and glad that he shared about it.
Cynthia - I think the use of the apostrophe was possessive in William's original post: "St. John's east end..." so, therefore, correct 🙂
Cynthia
I think any 5th grade teacher will tell you that when you add an apostrophe and an( s )to a word it becomes possessive. I agree,It is nice to differentiate between St John and St Johns. However the post is correct and William's thanks are welcome. Don't be so fast to criticize others.
FYI, the St. John's in the Caribbean I think you are trying to refer to is not an island - it is the capital city of Antigua. There is a St John's Island in Singapore, but none in the Caribbean.
Since this is a VI forum, is there really any doubt what is being referred to? It seems that someone is always crouching in the weeds waiting for someone to mistakenly write that "S" so that they can slam them. Everybody knows what's meant. Is there any real need to correct people on this matter? It's generally called giving somebody a break.
Boy, i hope when i get back and write a trip report, i'm not slammed for making a mistake in grammer.
Wiliam,
There are peeple on this bord that reed your message and don't kare about how you spel things but appreshiate your thoughts. We liked your mesage, two.
Connie
To avoid the issue entirely, maybe we should put trip reports in a standardized form...multiple choice anyone? 🙂
William, so glad you enjoyed your 2 week stay! Lookin forward to yur nex trip! 🙂
It's obvious they knew what they were talking about (St. John's vs St. John) is there really a need to slam them.....All of us who've been there and look forward to our next trip love hearing others experiences and welcome their reports regardless of grammer errors. Let's lighten up a bit! 🙂
It's nice to be nice. People should try it more often. To all of you that spoke up for William, good for you.
Leave us not get carried away wih St John vs St John's. However, the island of STJ (St. John) in the USVI is far removed from the capital city of Antigua which is St John's. Hope that clarifies!
William was entirely correct. The east end of St. John would be properly called St. John's east end just as the west end of Antigua would be called Antigua's west end.
Edited to add that I'm glad William had a great time & will be back. That's the only important thing.
First, the reference was to St. John's east end is is therefore correct usage. Second, who really cares, we know what was mean which is the purpose of language.
