I've been to St Thomas a couple times on a cruise, but my wife and I are going for the a week to do it properly in two weeks. I've been doing a lot of research over the past few months, and just wandered into this forum. I just want to thank all the people who are both asking questions and responding. I've learned a lot, which will make our vacation all the better.
But I still can't decide if it's worth going to Coki Beach and battling the barkers.
And here's something perhaps you didn't know, St John is getting a new park ranger. He just moved from my area, so if you run into him, say hi.
Thanks again.
You're very welcome. Hope you have a fantastic time! :@)
Coki Beach is pretty and its a good snorkeling spot, particularly for novices because its possible to see fish really close to shore. Over the years the vendors have sold dog biscuits and things to visitors to feed the fish so the fish come close to shore and sometimes to swimmers/snorkelers expecting handouts. (BTW, this practice of feeding fish food not natural to their diet is bad news for the fish and the balance of the reef.)
Coki has vendors on the beach selling food, drinks, renting snorkeling gear and chairs. They will approach but if you aren't interested in renting a chair or getting a drink than just tell them no thanks. It is a popular beach for cruise ship passengers/tours. If you want to go on a quiet day then look at the cruise ship schedule and pick a day with fewer ships. As for whether its worth going... some people love Coki for its atmosphere and the convenience of the vendors serving food/drinks; and others prefer beaches without vendors. Depends on what you like. Also, since you have a rental car, if you decide to head to Coki and then decide not to stay... several other beach options are just a 5-10 minute drive away. 🙂 Smith Bay Park (Lindquist) for example is a nice one, its usually quiet, its a beautiful beach, very few amenities. You can check out Coki and Lindquist, as well as the other beaches on St. Thomas' east end in the beach guide (click on St. Thomas in the navigation at the top of this page and then Beach Guide).
Enjoy!
