Even though the Virgin Islands are now a part of the US what colony do you still consider your islands to still be a part of? Bristish, French?

Ummmm if we're part of the US, then why would we consider ourselves to be a part of a different country?? We used to be part of Denmark before 1917, but so much time has passed that although we have cultural ties to Denmark, no one would see ourselves as being part of their country.

Hello Kimberly,

No colony. We are a territory of the United States and thats what we consider ourselves to be.

A little more on the topic...

The Virgin Islands includes both the US and British Virgin Islands. Residents from/in the British Virgin Islands are British. Residents from/in the US Virgin Islands are American and have loyalities to the US.

Although attempted and successful colonization in the what is today the USVI was done by French, British, Dutch, Spanish, Danish... it is the Danish that owned/operated/colonized the islands up until 1917 when the US bought the islands from Denmark. France owned St. Croix but thats almost 300 years ago. While there are some residents that have ties/sentiments to Denmark the large majority don't think about anything but being American. There are a substantial number of immigrants in the US Virgin Islands from other neighboring Caribbean Islands and many of them retain ties to their home island but not necessarily to a "mother country" as many of these same islands are independent. Many Caribbean people also consider themselves West Indian or Caribbean - creating a new facet of identity based on the Caribbean region and culture in addition to their particular island nationality. Islands like St. Martin, St. Barths, Guadeloupe... are part of the French West Indies and their residents have alligance to France appropriately in the same way we do to the US. Some of the independent islands that were formerly colonies retain some relationship to their former mother country if in no other form then ceremonial.
