We are planning to visit St. John in June 2008. --I can't wait. I am receiving conflicting reports on whether air condition is necessary or not. We are not totally spoiled to A/C, but don't want to melt either. We live in Louisiana so hot weather is no stranger to us. We also have that lovely humidity to go with it. Send me some opinions please.....is A/C totally necessary. Thanks

You're asking way in advance and that's good. Depends on where you're located, so have you decided yet where you'll be staying? A vllla, a hotel? Most rentals (both villas and hotels) have a/c, some villas just in the BR units, depending on location. You're looking forward to 2008. Nothing much really changes here where tourists are concerned.

Let us know what you're looking at and I'm sure the posters here will be more than happy to offer advice! Cheers!

We are from Houston so I share your experience with heat and humidity. As STT ReEsident mentioned, it depends on location. If you are staying in a villa, we find A/C is not necessary as long as we are in a location getting steady sea breezes. This usually means a location higher and on the eastern side of a hill. If you are in a location where breezes tend to be limited, I would look for A/C at least in the bedrooms in case you need them.
Bear in mind it will be hot between ~ 11 AM and 6 PM until the breezes kick up but you probably won't be in the villa during that time anyway.

I live in Houston, too. We just came back from St. John last week. Totally agree that it will depends on your location in St. John. I feel, plus, your personal heat and bug tolerance level.

For example, one night we visited Maho Bay camp. The person at frontdesk said they had very cool tradewind so air condition was not necessary. However, when we walked out, we passed by a couple who was talking to each other about how hot it was last night even with the fan on.

Also, personally, I can tolerate a lot of heat and sun, but I have very little tolerance of bugs. And bugs love me. Yes, the breeze was nice if we opened the windows and doors. But bugs could still get in. My legs would be covered by itchy bug bites the next day. We only used the screen windows and doors for one day and never opened glass windows and doors, again.

Just back yesterday, and I couldn't see not having air conditioning . Our summers in NYC get hot and the humidity is unbearable but it was so hot and no breeze that it felt like someone was standing on my chest.

Wouldn't take a chance on a/c, especially sleeping at night. Humidity is tough and during the day it doens't seem like the a/c gets that cool.

Thanks so much for your info. We are going to be in a villa. We have narrowed it down to about 5. Of course the ones I love show no A/C....Coco Beach, Cameron Cove, Cliffside, Paper Moon. The others I am interested in are Sea Spirit, Island Time and Siempre Azul. Anyone know anything about any of these. Thanks so much.

jannew,
I would suggest starting a new thread for the villa info in STJ as I haven't looked at this thread after the first 3 posts due to the subject being on a/c and I felt your answers had been answered! You will get more response! I wish I could help you, but I don't know anything about villa's in STJ only STT!
