I'm renting a private villa from a vacation rental office and he told me that taxi rates are very expensive. He's trying to get me a private car pickup to go from the Airport to the Sapphire Beach area and is charging me $50.00. Should I go with a taxi instead?

We have taken taxis many times to the Red Hook ferry and the taxi has stopped and dropped off people at the Sapphire Beach Resort. I know they did not charge us $50 for that ride and it is a "set" fee they can charge you. This fee is posted on a board at the airport right by the taxi stand. Believe me, there are lines of taxis waiting when you get off the plane. If you have more than 2 people though, maybe the $50 was for multiple occupancy and it may not be that high. We usually take the van style taxi and they hold about 10 people.

Hello Jane,

Its about $10 a person plus $2 to $4 per suitcase to Sapphire from the airport, depends on the size of the bag/luggage and how many you have for the luggage fee. The per person fare is if you are sharing a taxi. If you want a private taxi they will charge more. Most taxis are vans or safaris and they can hold from 9-20 people depending on the vehicle so most drivers try to get a few people, a few couple, a few small groups together to make the trip more worth while. I think $50 is steep unless you have a large group and that covers everyone. There are always taxis at the airport so you can find one when you get in.

Actually, $50 is cheap! A private taxi for $50 usually gets you to Frenchman's Reef. $70 to The Ritz and $60 to Red Hook. I believe it's fpr up to 6 passengers.

If you're staying at a villa, you will be better off renting a car!
