I will be visiting St Thomas in apr for six days, will be staying at the Renaissance and plan to go to Charlotte Amolie, Sapphire beach, red hook etc etc. I need advice on which would be the most economical, renting a car or taking taxi's wherever I go. thanks

We have always rented a vehicle as we like the freedom and we also like to explore. Based upon the taxi rates that we have seen and the amount of trips around that we always make, it is without a doubt cheaper to rent a car. We have always used Dependable Car Rental. I like the people that run it and they are a small family type of operation. Have fun regardless of how you get around.

We've done it both ways for a group of four.

I think the dollars were close to equal. During our visit when we used taxi's only, we usually took a roundtrip during the days to beach it or whatnot and another at nite for dinner entertainment...

Taxi's are prevelent everywhere so that is not an issue - flexibility is not hampered in that regard. If you like to toss down a few island drinks and/or beers then the taxi route has all kinds of advantages. No worries...

Renting a car does give you a better sense of freedom, but parking can be problematic downtown or at Red Hook...

FWIW

hi bill,

my husband and i JUST got back from st. thomas.

our thoughts are... if you like driving, then rent. if not, leave the driving to the cab drivers. if you plan to hop from parts of st. thomas more than once a day... then we'd suggest renting (if you don't mind the narrow, steep mountainous drives).

have a wonderful time!
