How accurate are the rates for taxi's that are posted on this forum? They say that they are effective from October of 2005? How do you hire a taxi at the airport for these rates?

Those are the current rates. The rates are regulated. The taxi dispatcher at the airport will put you on the right taxi.

Thank you, STT Resident. Although we've been to the islands several times we've never used the taxi service. We've always hired a private service, at a great expense. We're looking to shave costs somewhat this time. Those rates just seemed to good to be real? Your answers are much appreciated. Sounds very simple!

As of a week ago, the fares were accurate. We went from the airport to St. John via taxi to the Red Hook ferry and returned via the ferry to Charlotte Amalie and taxi from there to the airport. We much preferred the latter. Although the taxi to Red Hook allowed us to see a bit of St. Thomas, the taxi ride was just plain scary. The ferry from STJ to CA also allowed us to get a good look at STT.

Another idea that we're going to try this fall is, assuming you'll be renting a jeep on STJ, would be renting a jeep on STT, and after the drive to Red Hook, take the car ferry over. We're looking forward to getting our luggage into the Jeep from the airport, and not worrying about it until we get to the villa. We'll have an added bonus, as far as doing some food shopping on STT,as it's cheaper , and why not hit Duffy's Love Shack on the way?!-(I love those fiji wings...)

Hello-
We're coming in June 28 with about eight people. How much would it cost to get us from the airport to the ferry? And what is the additional cost for a stop at Kmart? Thanks.

The taxi's charge per person and not per taxi and hold 8-10 people. The rate from the airport to the Red Hook ferry is $15.00 per person.

Since the whole taxi would be your party, negotiate with the driver about a stop at K-mart. I imagine he would charge a certain price for a certain time period.

My family and I just got back from St. John. The price we paid both ways for taxi between the airport and red hook was $15 per person, which included your bags...just know that when you get to the baggage claim area in the airport, there will be ever-so-helpful gentlemen offering to tote your bags out to an awaiting taxi on a cart, but this will be an additional "tip" which they seem to expect around $2 per bag. If you are on a budget, just tell them you can handle your own bags, walk about 20 feet out the door and you will then be directed to an awaiting taxi.

Also, an extra tip...if anyone in your travel party are prone to motion sickness, the taxi ride may be a problem. We didn't have anyone actually lose their lunch, but they got pretty green sitting in the back seat and these were the same people who have no trouble on a boat.

Have a great time!

Ferry and taxi schedules and rates can all be found at www.stthomasthisweek.com. This is updated bi-monthly and should help you. Bear in mind that taxi rates are per person, per direction. So, if you have a lot of people, you may want to consider a private driver. In any case, I'd recommend you take the ferry from Charlotte Amalie to St. John (vs Red Hook). It's only 3 miles from the airport. Good luck!

We recently experienced the same thing with the "van" taxis that were waiting when we picked up our luggage. Very warm, very fast, very packed with people. I was green. Another tidbit--STT the last night. Had a taxi pick us up at Miller Manor to go to the airport 5:30 a.m. for 7:05 flight out---approx a 10-12 minute ride. He charged the 2 of us $75 !!! The night before he charged us $18 for about the same amount of time. I do think I got taken for a true ride.......shame on him.

rede2go: You weren''t taken for a ride in that sense. This quote from the taxi rates posted on this forum should explain it. Between the midnight to 6AM surcharge, the exclusivity of your ride and your baggage, $75 sounds about right. Cheers!

"Between midnight and 6:00am, there shall be an additional charge of $2.00 per person.

Any person requesting a taxi exclusively for themselves are as follows:
Airport to Red Hook: $90 for 1-4 passengers, (5 or more passengers add $15 for each additional person).
Within Town Limits: $55 for 1-4 passengers, (5 or more passengers add $7 for each additional person).
Airport to Frenchman's Reef, Limetree or Bolongo: $65 for 1-4 passengers, (5 or more passengers will pay an additional fare each)."

The taxi who dropped you off the night before and was there for you at 5:30 AM was being very responsible and accommodating IMO, the price seems reasonable considering.

Saw your note. We are staying on St. John next month and our flight leaves STT at 7:55am. I have been told that there is a 6am ferry to Red Hook. Which would put me on STT about 6:30. Is that going to be enough time to get checked in for my 7:55am flight? Is the airport busy that early?

Thanks for your help.

If you are doing carryon only and preprint your boarding passes you might make it.

Suzy: Leaving on the 6AM ferry isn't going to work for a 7:55AM flight unless you're willing to take a very BIG chance of not getting on board. Check-in is 2 hours before departure so you should be at the airport at 6AM.

Best bet is to stay your final night on STT and there are several options. If you decide to do this there are many who can offer their opinions on where to stay. Cheers!

We did it last year and it was close.
