I'll be in STT in 4 days. I would really appreciate some idea of what recent visitors have paid for private and public taxi service. I've read that internet fares are not always accurate nor updated, so what are the current rates? This whole taxi thing is making me a little uneasy. I'm wanting to stay within a budget and I can't seem to get a feel for how this expense will fit in. Thanks for any help.

Coki Beach to Red Hook $4.00/ea
Charlotte Amalie to Meagans Beach- $10.00/ea
Meagans Beach to Red Hook- $10.00/ea

All were with public taxis.

At the top of this page click on St. Thomas and then on Taxi Rates.

Jo:

If you're a family of 2 or more and staying more than a couple of days it would probably be better to rent a car.
Taxis are expensive and they charge per person, not per taxi.

For example (based on 2 people):

Airport to an East End property (Sapphire Beach, Wyndhum Sugar Bay, etc.): $13. X 2 = $26. each way, or $52. Round Trip Plus Tips
Property Red Hook for dinner, ferry, etc.: $6. X 2 = $12. each way, or $24. Round Trip Plus Tips

Plus a rental car allows you to explore the island at your own pace.

Hertz offers AAA discounts on-line. Or try Hertz, Avis, Budget via the Entertainment Book for discounts.

Hope this helps.

I will chime in and suggest a rental car too. I really wish we'd done that. We spent more on taxis that we would have on a car. But when we were planning our trip, my husband didn't think we needed a car. I knew he was wrong. 😉 If we'd rented a car, we'd have been able to see more than we did. We still saw/did a lot, but you know what I mean. 🙂

I second Geri's thoughts - While I was alittle nervous about renting a car, all on here encouraged me to do it and I must say - it added so much to our trip! Beyond the freedom of going wherever, whenever, Driving was FUN - tackling the challenge of driving on the left - then the lack of street signs and the ups and downs of island terrain! Within a day, I was just enjoying driving - couldn't wait to see what was beyond the next bend (or beyond the crest of the hill - at times you couldn't tell if there was a road under your front wheels! Sort of like standing at the top of the black diamond ski slopes with your skis hanging over the edge! ) Also - I tend to be a bit stingy with my cash and I know if I had to call a taxi, every time I thought about going somewhere, I would be asking myself if it was worth the cab fare. Rent the car! Rent the car!
