why in the world would you want to fish for tarpon? it is garbage fish. why not go for some mahi or dolphin fish? tarpon can be found almost anywhere around stx, but yet again... it is garbage fish. enjoy the trash if you go fishing for it.

Hello George,

Which island(s) are you visiting? Are you wanting to do a charter or fish for the shore?

Its called sport....g-stone. Not every fish caught has to be killed and eaten.
It supposed to be the best and highest challenge in the world(for fishermen)to fly fish for bone fish or tarpon on a small two man boat. ( Rather than hooking a fish that has little chance of escape because the line is large enough to anchor a boat.)

G-stone, I second what Chris said above ....tarpon is fished for the sport ,not tablefare. Once you hook into one and it starts doing jumps, runs and turns, you will be hooked. The aerial acrobatics are awesome! Your adrenaline will be running, heart pumping and sweat will be beading down your forehead. You will be hooked!

Fishing from the beach is usually off to the sides away from where people swim. Magens for example does not allow fishing from the beach. However, you could hook into tarpon off to the left (facing the water) from the rocks like I have. You'll have to take into consideration the time and tides as well. Early morning is best.

Most of the beaches on STT will have tarpon at times although the ones off the beaten path like Bordeaux are best. Check with the guys at Neptune tackle in Red Hook and they will point you in the right direction. Go with a guide who uses live bait if you can. And if you want to go night fishing, check out http://www.southof20.com/ . I have not had a chance to go out with him but have spoken to him over the phone and he seems to be knowledgeable.

Now if you can rent a kayak.......
