My favorite drink in St John this time was the Tap Room's homemade rootbeer and Cruzan vanilla rum. It was so good. The bad thing is that I have tried to make it since I got back trying store bought root beer and it is not the same at all. Anybody got any ideas of what rootbeer would be the best?
I have been using Sprecher's Root Beer with Cruzan Vanilla for some time now and it's wonderful. Here is a review of various root beers (Sprecher's came in #1) in the NY Times:
As a kid we made our own root beer every year, bottled it and let it age in the basement till ready....wish I had the recipe still. It involved a lot of sugar, yeast and egg whites to make it foamy. We mixed it up in a giant tub and I got to eat the sugar that settled out on the bottom. One year all the bottles exploded in the basement, what a mess but we obtained a bottle capper contraption after that which worked great! I miss those "kid-days" !!
You already know the answer but we do not want to accept it. Location. location, location. Not to say the Tap Room is the best bar I've been in but the location and general mood when entering does make a big difference.
PS
It also helps that their RB is not as sweet or carbonated. Try it without the flavored rum
