Hi, we will be on St. Thomas with day trips to St. John, and we were wondering how the reception is with T-Mobile on both or either island?

Thanks for your input.

You will get limited coverage in STJ using T-Mobile if your phone can access the analog signal. My Samsung did not while my son's older Nokia was fine.

How about Nextel? 🙂

My understanding is many of the services have the same problem as they try to move everyone from analog/digital to pure digital. They have pushed the suppliers to offer fancier phones to 'grab' the consumer but have not yet upgraded their systems to all digital. The newer, lighter phones are not designed to receive analog so they are useless if an all digital network is not available in your area. This is true for many parts of the US and not limited to VI.
You can check with Nextel to make sure, but I would specifically ask if they are using an analog network in VI and if your particular phone accepts analog signal.

We were in the VI's in May with our T-Mobile phones, which they told us would work fine. In the center of St Thomas I got a call for about a minute and it worked fine. When we got on island (St John) they didn't work on any area of the island for days. We were then told that we needed some kind of chip that was not available on island. I asked them to Fed Ex me one overnight since we were never told, in the three times we called them before we left, that we needed one. They said they would get back to me. All of the sudden the next day (unfortunately second to last) we got service. So my answer to your question would be, you won't know till you get there....hope for the best!

Maybe it's just me, but why would you want cell phone coverage in the USVI? I'm going to get away from all that .....!

Why make it easy for somebody to call about some minor detail and interrupt your downtime? You're in the VI. Too far away to do anything about it anyway.

I don't plan to even give the office the resort phone number. They can handle whatever happens until I get back .

We will be traveling with my sister and brother-in-law and it will be their first vacation without the kids since they've been married. The kids are in good hands because my other sister will be watching them. That being said, they will feel a lot better if they could be contacted in case of an emergency. They also hope to be able to get away from it all. Hence these lovely 8 days in paradise!!

MB,

Fortunately (for us) we don't have that problem. Our youngest is 35. So, I don't usually factor children in to the picture (except for trips with grand kids).

I understand their concern on their first "no-kids" outing. Would probably feel the same (actually, did feel the same at one time).

I hope you all enjoy your trip. Be sure and visit Hawksnest and Cinnamon beaches.

We will be there (St. John) in September and are really looking forward to it.

Just returned (8/23) from St. John. Took my T-Mobile Blackberry with me and had no luck getting a connection anywhere on St. John. Verizon wireless worked fine though. Have a great time - we certainly did
