I found on the sunrise & sunset webpage http://www.sunrisesunset.com/custom_srss_calendar.asp
that the sun rises around 6:00 & sets around 7:00, for the month of July! Why does the sun set so early there? Here in the continental US (indiana) the sun does not set until 8:30 or 9:00. Why do we get more hours of sun than you VIslanders?
I think it might have something to do with the axis of the Earth and the fact that during the summer months Indiana is more tilted toward the sun and gets more hours of direct sunlight than the equator (where the VIs are). I'm real rusty on my astronomy, but I believe that's the reason. 😉
CG - Rusty or not, you're right. The further north or south of the equator you are, the bigger difference there is in the number of daylight hours between the summer and winter. By contrast, locations closer to the equator see less daylight difference between summer and winter. I suppose if we averaged the daylight hours for north and south locations across a whole year, the average would be roughly the same.
It has to do with 24hr rotation on the axis and the annual trip around the sun. My husband just got back from Fairbanks where it was 24hr sun. but cold! I look forward to the basic 12-12 in the islands, My body hates all the night of winters.
thank you all for your info, see you in a few weeks, it's just not getting here fast enough!!!!
