I can't remember if there is a Sunglass Hut type store downtown or if stores like AH Rise sell them. Would they be cheaper than stateside if you know off hand? Some brands I would be looking for are Oakley, Maui Jim, Coach, etc.
I'll be in on thursday and can't wait for some nice weather!

FYI: almost all sunglass brands are made by one company; Italian manufacturer Luxottica.

First Google result

When you think about the ridiculous prices they charge for a piece of plastic, it makes perfect sense. Competition is virtually non-existant. I assume the same goes for the frames used for prescription glasses.

The cost for prescription glasses is different. They have to make the lenses specifically for your needs, but you can easily find frames for $7.95 online.

Regular sunglasses are all plastic manufactured crap. If you need a name, go buy some Chinese knock-off online.

Is this for real? What kid of answer is that? There are sunglasses stores at about every location. As for prices, I can't tell you. Hope you enjoy and find what you are looking for!

John -You might look into Serengetti - they are Corning optics and not plastic crap.
Speed - some great stores here in all the major shopping areas - huge selection and fair pricing - have fun.

Last year there was still a sunglass hut inside AH Riise downtown and I believe a branch at Havensight. The bargain is the fact that you pay no sales tax. Prices will be the same as stateside.

Plenty of spots to choose from down there.
Check out Maui Jim's new "Island Time" shades...

Caribbean Surf Company is a great place for Sunglasses in Havensight, Red Hook, and Downtown. If you are looking for a lot of the name brand stuff, the retailers are forced to sell at MSRP or risk losing certification. However, Caribbean Surf has a great selection and is local so better to support them than Sunglass Hut in my opinion...

Just curious as to what you consider "local". Sunglass Hut has been here for close to 20 years.

I think ventotg means Sunglass Hut is a nationally owed company. Might be a francise, like Subway, IHOP, McDonalds, etc., but not sure if it is.

I know. I was just making a point. As you said, there are several "franchised" businesses here, many of which have been here for a very long time. Although they're franchised they're owned and operated by and employ local staff. That they're bound by their franchise agreement to adhere to certain strict business parameters doesn't mean that that they're not "local" businesses. Cheers!
