Hello, I am planning a trip for 5 couples to St Thomas over the holidays....one is an avid hunter, likes to fly fish, but does not tolerate sailing/boating well. He is driving me crazy asking "what is there to do?"! The rest of us are comfortable hanging at the beach...shopping, tanning, etc.,
Can anyone suggest something off the beaten path that this traveler may enjoy besides the usual beach activities??? Any suggestions appreciated!

Being from Michigan, I did a lot of hunting. When I moved here I needed to have my "hunting fix", so a friend suggested spearfishing. That kept me quite busy and I ate very well! Might try that. Any of the marine stores will have spears. Lobster hunting is always a hoot and it's got some great perks! But you willneed a snare for that...no spearing the lobesters! And there are so many different excursions to choose from that being bored is hardly an option! He will be able to make his vacation as active or inactive as he would like. But, I'd be willing to bet that if you got a mask on his face and him in the water he would happy as a clam (pun intended). He could also try windsurfing, kite surfing, parasailing, waverunners, skiing, deep sea fishing, BOB'ing (www.bobusvi.com), scuba diving, beach volleyball, horseshoes, rent a scooter or motorcycle for the day, sightseeing/shopping, rent a boat for the day, take a helicopter tour, fly over to ST. Croix for the casino (or Puerto Rico), play golf, go to Coral World...gee, the list just goes on and on! And, of course, there's the ever present island 'ting....limin' and drinkin'!! Does that help?

Hi all
My wife and I are planning a trip to STT and STJ and are wondering if it's advisable to pack along snorkeling fins? We are bringing the masks and snorkels but would prefer to not carry the fins. Is it worth renting them at our different stops?

Thanks
Bob

Hello Bob,

Some places rent snorkel equipment on the beach ie. Cinnamon and Trunk on St. John... however if you were going out to Waterlemon or Lameshur there aren't any vendors or amenities at those spots. You could rent fins for a few days from a dive shop. Some of the calmer snorkeling spots that are close to shore like Coki on St. Thomas can be snorkeled without fins. So the answer depends on where you plan to snorkel and how often??

We always bring all our snorkel gear-I'm hesitant to wear what hundreds of others have worn. But anyway, I think the fins are the easiest to pack. They lie pretty flat on the bottom of the suitcase. Also, you will have your own and won't have to worry about charges and getting them back on time, etc.

Jo-Ann is correct, they don't take up much space in the suitcase and it's nice to have them whenever you are ready. I woulnd't worry about wearing what others have worn, though. All of the rental agencies use bleach and water to clean all of the gear. I think it's a regulation or something. I know that when I worked on one of the large boats that took up to 80 passengers for a snorkel trip, my boss was a stickler about putting them in the bleach water every time someone was done.

Another option would be to buy a cheap pair at K-mart when you get here or go to one of the dive shops (Coki Beach Dive Club) for better quality at a higher price. I'm sure you'll be taking lots of other things home with you (liquor, souvenirs, jewelry, etc.)...might as well bring some gear, too!
