I need suggestions for a good read. I enjoyed "Don't Stop the Carnival" and "An Embarrassment of Mangoes" (although I was disappointed that she called Waterlemon, "watermelon"). It's 95 degrees here in the Midwest and I'm trying to keep the Caribbean vibes alive by submersing myself in good books and rum! Unfortunately the body of water that I'm living out my fantasy on is the public swimming pool. However, if I close my eyes after drinking enough rum, I can see my favorite view as I look out from Leinster Bay... 🙂
Any good books I should stick my nose in to keep the dream alive?
My due date is November 24...the date I'm back to the USVIs! It is simply sinful when you look forward to your return date to St. John the way you look forward to major family events and milestones -- maybe even more! My husband says I'm an addict. It's true! ...and how sweet it is!
Thanks everyone!
Have a great night!
"Where is Joe Merchant", was the first Buffet novel I read. I figured out then that the singing guy also had a pretty good mind. I , of course, had previously been assuming that the Buffet in question was not capable of more than an entertaining song. I owned a resort bar during the release of "...Margaretiville". I was soon tired and distraught at repeatedly hearing my customers and bartenders play the silly song over and over again.
But there is a reason for everything. I have found that J Buffet has written several entertaining things. Go ahead and read them all. Better yet , don't read them when you are going to the tropics. Read them when you are sitting in your cold sad dwelling. It will give you a lift. Go to the tropics and enjoy. Read a good book at home and transport yourself to a better place.
Cold sad dwelling? It may be Massachusetts, but it's not that bad...
My father had a book that I always wished I had read. I truly cannot remember the name, it was something like "the drum beats on" - the book dramatizes the first negro revolt in the Americas, on St. John. Unfortunately I cannot find it on Amazon.
Hey Sitter, we head back for our 5th visit to STJ on Nov 27th so we'll keep an eye out for postings on a Get-Together. We went to one last Nov and had a great time and met wonderful people, 2 couples especially that we continue to stay in contact with. Here is Boston it has finally gotten back to bearable temps thank goodness as Boston Buffet Guy and CCCasebolt will confirm. My plants look like crap. Anyway, we can't wait to head back too and this time it'll be a pre-cursor for me, heat wise, as I head out for 3 weeks in Cambodia to do volunteer medical work in January and hear its pretty brutal there. Why are all the good places hot?

EE's right again!
"Night of the Silent Drums" is outstanding. The 1992 VI edition is a Mapes MONDe publication (Tortola, Rome, St. Thomas) and it is illustrated with "50 Rare Illustrations, 12 by William Blake" but it was originally published in 1975 by Charles Scribner's Sons. It is billed as "The True and Gripping Tale of the St. John Virgin Island Slave Rebellion" and the book is well worth tracking down.
